David May

David May, Ph.D.
Director, Mathematics Pathways

David May is the Director for Mathematics Pathways at the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU). He manages the Advancing Mathematics Pathways for Student Success (AMPSS) project, a coalition of university associations, mathematics professional societies, and nonprofit organizations with the mission of streamlining undergraduate math requirements so that students get the math they need and pursue smoother pathways to college completion. Before joining APLU, he served as Director for P-20 Partnerships and STEM Initiatives at the University System of Maryland, directing educational projects funded by the National Science Foundation and involving faculty and administrators from colleges, universities, and K-12 school districts.

May has more than a decade of experience in developing and directing partnerships of educational institutions, education research, program evaluation, teacher professional development, and grant writing. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from The Ohio State University, specializing in physics education research, a Master’s degree in physics and astronomy from the University of Rochester, and a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physics from Earlham College.
