Northeast Joint Summer Session
Opportunities at the Rural-Urban Interface
The rural-urban interface is a transition zone and an area for opportunity for both sectors in the Northeast. While conflict and competition between the sectors is often shared by the mass media (e.g., complaints, nuisance law suits, vandalism), the interface serves far greater, complementary roles. Urban Northeasterners are dependent on the goods and services (food, fiber, and recreation) provided by the rural community. The reverse is equally true: rural communities are dependent on urban communities. While the boundaries of the communities are not clear: there are clear lessons for higher education to contribute to ensure the vitality of both sectors.
