Christopher S. Brown, PhD began the role of Vice President for Research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in January 2017. His administrative functions include strategic planning, regulatory oversight, recruitment, and space allocation for a research enterprise generating over $500 million annually.
From 2012-2016, Brown served as the Vice President for Research at University of North Carolina System, with its 16 public universities, $1.35B in research awards in 2015, and 225,000 students. During his time as Vice President for Research, research funding for the University of North Carolina system grew by $125M. He previously served as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Development from 2007 to 2012. Brown was the Director/Principal Investigator of the NASA/North Carolina Space Grant from 2003-2016.
Throughout his career, Brown has received over $22 million in grants and contracts for research, education, and commercial development projects from Federal and state sources, resulting in more than 70 refereed publications.
