4-H Youth Development Extension Specialist

Extension Specialist, 4-H Youth Development, Northwest Kansas

About This Role:

The Northwest Regional Extension Office and Department of 4-H Youth Development seeks a dynamic and innovative professional to provide leadership and programmatic direction for 4-H Youth Development in the Northwest region of Kansas. The successful candidate will also provide statewide leadership for the strategic priority related to developing and delivering education programs and workforce readiness initiatives related to agriculture, health, food systems and STEM-related careers. The Extension Specialist will be a leading resource to Extension professionals, strengthen external partnerships and seek additional funding for the purpose of building program capacity in areas of workforce readiness and career preparation. The Extension Specialist will have responsibility for program evaluation related to their program area and for communicating the impact of 4-H youth development and the contribution youth are making towards becoming prepared for the workplace.

The Extension Specialist will carry out the mission of the 4-H Youth Development Program and KSRE under the direction of the Northwest Kansas Regional Director and the State Program Leader of 4-H Youth Development. This position is located in Colby, KS.

The successful candidate will be expected to integrate responsibilities with departmental programs and activities and serve as a valuable and effective resource to Extension professionals. The faculty member will be expected to contribute to the broader mission of Research and Extension and integrate responsibilities, where appropriate, to address the grand challenges, including water, global food systems, health, vital communities and leadership for tomorrow.

What You'll Need to Succeed:


  • Master’s Degree in education, youth development, human development, human resources, community and regional development, agriculture and natural resources systems or related fields
  • Four (4) or more years of relevant experience
  • Experience and demonstrated ability in working with youth and youth organizations including understanding of positive youth development and youth program management.
  • Demonstrated leadership in understanding and working with diverse populations, and/or strong evidence of cultural sensitivity.
  • Experience in working with individuals, coworkers, boards, and teams to accomplish individual and/or group goals, as evidenced by college, career, and/or community activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to create working partnerships with schools, agencies, businesses, and communities.
  • Effective sales and customer service skills in working with and listening to clients'/constituents' needs
  • Demonstrated communication skills (publications, presentations, web and social media).


  • Demonstrated competence with growing external constituent partnerships and leading collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and programs.
  • Demonstrated competence in program needs assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Managerial or Supervisory Experience
  • Experience with workforce readiness initiatives particularly related to agriculture, health, food systems and STEM-related careers.
  • Successful experience teaching in a formal or non-formal setting.
  • Successful experience in developing financial support for educational programs including grant writing, fund generation, contracting and/or cost recovery efforts.
  • Ability to utilize electronic and online technologies for educational program delivery.
