Job Description

POSITION: Agriculture Extension Educator

LOCATION: Houston, Missouri and primarily serves Texas county in Southwest region, and with additional coverage as needed.

The MU Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) program is strategically focused on the goal of improving Missourian’s quality of life, enhance the economic viability of Missouri enterprises, while protecting the environment and the state’s natural resources. MU Extension programming is publically supported by county, state, and federal partners, as well as private resources to enrich the learning experiences of citizens throughout Missouri.

This position is responsible for providing programing in the following subject-matter areas livestock, agronomy, and horticulture. Responsibilities include planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programs in the following subject-matters: general agriculture production, including livestock, forage agronomy, and horticulture. Programming may also include animal nutrition, soil fertility, and home horticulture production. MU Extension programs promote, enhances, and develops efficient and viable production, management and sustainable systems.


  • Under the guidance of regional specialists, regional director and senior program directors, deliver research-based educational programs within Texas County to enhance the success and well-being of the local communities. Work with colleagues to implement interdisciplinary programs, as well as collect quantitative and qualitative data to evaluate the impact MU Extension programs have on the community.
  • Create and maintain relationships with partners, ensuring continued growth and impact of the programs. Provide organizational support for volunteer leadership for the Texas County Master Gardener Program.
  • In collaboration with colleagues, work to develop strategies for fee generation.
  • Participate in training and development opportunities appropriate for the position.
  • Ensure compliance with federal requirements.
  • Market and promote the mission of MU Extension.

Conduct all activities in accordance with the Civil Rights Acts, Title IX, Rehabilitation, Americans with Disabilities Act and local, state, and region affirmative action plans.

As with all positions, involvement with other duties and responsibilities may be expected in order to support the mission and purpose of MU Extension.

Position will require flexible hours including weeknight and some weekend availability. Overnight travel will also be needed to fulfill the responsibilities of this position. Travel using own transportation is required (mileage reimbursement available) for the position.

This is a 12-month academic position.

Bachelor’s degree with minimum of 24 hours of upper-level coursework in one or more of the following areas livestock production, forage production, or agriculture economics.

Other Information

Ability to understand, synthesize and communicate relevant information to diverse audiences including experience working with under-served audiences.

Ability to work with a minimum of supervision in an unstructured setting.

Must be able to pass and maintain a criminal background check and child abuse neglect screening.

Two or more years of experience which demonstrates knowledge and skills in production agriculture.

Ability to effectively use information technology including a variety of Windows based computer software programs.

Access to reliable transportation and ability to move 30 pounds.


Salary Range: $14.71 - $16.54 an hour
