The University of Delaware dairy farm services the needs of the Department of Animal & Food Science by providing dairy animals for use in research, teaching and extension programs and projects. The dairy farm also provides a source of milk for production of ice cream and cheese at the UDairy Creamery.

This position assists the Dairy Manager in operation of the dairy facility and dairy herd. Assists in coordinating animal projects, facility projects, research projects, herd health, herd reproduction, herd nutrition with broad and general oversite from the Dairy Manager. Conducts oversite and training of student workers and assists professors with dairy related classes and labs to achieve a valuable learning environment for the students. Works as farm assistant when needed to cover work load. Independent judgement is required to resolve routine and non-routine problems. Acts on behalf of Dairy Manager when dairy manager is absent from work.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assists Dairy Manager in day to day operation of the dairy herd

• Supervises students in training and teaching dairy knowledge and procedures

• Performs routine tasks such as feeding, watering, milking and breeding of farm animals

• Supervise staff in work projects assigned by Dairy Manager

• Assists veterinarians with medical procedures

• Provides assistance to researchers in conducting experiments and collecting experimental data

• Maintains computer production, health, reproduction, nutrition and inventory records

• Administers drugs and medications to animals as instructed

• Performs minor repair work to facilities and animal equipment

• Assists in creating student work schedules

• Performs other related duties as assigned

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS/OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:

The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum of a high school diploma or GED with five or more years’ farm-operations experience, with three years of dairy farm experience preferred.

• Knowledge of general practices and operations of equipment as well as advanced and comprehensive knowledge of heating, plumbing, electrical, carpentry and masonry work.

• Ability to coordinate multiple projects concurrently.

• Ability and willingness to learn and accept new ideas, techniques and responsibilities.

• Interpersonal skills.

• Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

• Basic computing skills, with ability to use email, internet, and MS Office software such as Word and Excel.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• With or without assistance, must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds.

• Must be able to work in cramped areas and positions for extended periods of time, climb ladders in excess of 50 feet, and work above floor level or in pits.

• May be required to maintain a valid CDL A, B or C operator's license.

• Artificial Insemination certified or able to obtain certificate within six months
