The Computer Science (CS) Department at the University of Idaho (UI) seeks qualified candidates for the position of Associate Chair at our Coeur d’Alene (CdA) campus. The candidate must have sufficient credentials to qualify for the rank of Associate Professor or higher. The Associate Chair will be responsible for coordination with leadership and advocating for faculty, staff, and students in CdA. The Associate Chair will lead planning for the program and deploy the policies and practices of the CS department. In addition, he or she will coordinate faculty teaching schedules with the CS Chair and assure times and locations meet local needs and compliment the entire statewide outreach, while ensuring quality of student educational and research experience (e.g., reviewing theses and dissertations, mediating and resolving conflicts, awarding scholarships and assistantships and facilitating career opportunities). Facilitate collaborative efforts related to initiatives such as the Co-op program and establish working groups to ensure successful initiation and growth.

Duties & Responsibilities may include the following:

• Support advising and supervising undergraduate and graduate students.

• Ensuring quality of student educational and research experience (e.g., reviewing theses and dissertations, mediating and resolving conflicts, awarding scholarships and assistantships and facilitating career opportunities).

• Teach courses in areas of expertise as necessary.

• Plan and initiate new programs and projects and coordinate research with other colleges/departments at UI and other Universities, with governmental agencies, and Industry.

• Establish a national or international reputation for scholarship by initiating, conducting, and directing scholarly activities.

• Obtain sufficient external funding to support on-going scholarly activity and graduate students.

• Facilitate collaborative efforts related to initiatives such as the Co-op program and engage team to ensure successful initiation and growth.

• Represent and promote the CS department in Coeur d’Alene and the surrounding communities.

• Oversee student advising and making sure students are making adequate progress towards meeting graduation requirements.

• Ensuring quality of student educational and research experience (e.g., reviewing theses and dissertations, mediating and resolving conflicts, awarding scholarships and assistantships and facilitating career opportunities).

The candidate must hold a doctorate degree (e.g., Ph.D.) in computer science or closely related field. Candidates must possess excellent communication skills; the motivation to help build a broad-based undergraduate computer science community at University of Idaho CdA; and a strong commitment to education and mentoring.

The University of Idaho is the state’s land-grant institution, and the leading research institution in the state of Idaho. From its residential campus in Moscow, UI serves the state of Idaho through educational centers throughout the state. Several research centers exist at the University of Idaho, including the Institute for Bioinformatics and Evolutionary Studies, National Institute for Advanced Transportation Technology, Center for Secure and Dependable Systems, Center for Modeling Complex Interactions and the Northwest Knowledge Network. We are a certified National Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Information Assurance and Cybersecurity Education.

The Computer Science Department is housed within the College of Engineering, and delivers education from three locations – Moscow, Idaho Falls, and Coeur d’Alene. We recently received several grants that have further enhanced our capacities to deliver high quality research-based hands-on undergraduate courseware. These grants have enabled high fidelity video conferencing (VC) technology enhanced classrooms that serve our students synchronized education-at-a-distance across our three campuses. The CdA program receives and delivers the curriculum using a combination of face-to-face and VC capabilities. Graduate degrees, through the PhD, are already available via our program; these capabilities are enhanced with resident faculty in the three locations.

The UI Coeur d’Alene Center, located on scenic Lake Coeur d’Alene, is 90 miles north of the main University of Idaho campus in a beautiful and affordable resort community that is the economic hub of northern Idaho. The region boasts a growing tech business sector and includes Spokane, Washington, a city of 210,000, 25 minutes to the west. Outdoor recreational and cultural opportunities abound in this lake-, mountain- and riverside destination.

The successful candidate for either of these positions will have an earned PhD in CS or a closely related field. The program includes a tight partnership with North Idaho College and an emphasis on industry involvement and real-world experiences for students. Experts in the areas of robotics, artificial intelligence, embedded systems and cybersecurity are especially encouraged to apply.
