Position Summary: The Associate Director, Cooperative Extension Administration, provides primary support for the Associate Dean and Director, including input for the development of needed policies and procedures, gathering and compiling data for reports, and developing/maintaining online reporting systems. In absence of the Director, or at the Director’s direction, the individual provides overall administrative leadership for Cooperative Extension. The individual serves as the state contact for program areas and provides leadership for effective programming.

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) is a major unit of the University of Nevada Reno, and resides in the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources. UNCE uses peer reviewed research to find solutions to community based issues and needs, within six broad legislatively mandated areas: agriculture; children, youth and families; community development; health and nutrition; horticulture; natural resources. Our mission is to discover, develop, disseminate, preserve and use knowledge to strengthen the social, economic and environmental well-being of people and their communities. Cooperative Extension has offices in 16 of Nevada’s 17 counties with programs that span very large urban centers with over one million residents to isolated ranching and farming communities of several hundred or fewer inhabitants.

Required Qualifications: Doctorate Degree in Agriculture; Natural Resources; Range Management; Nutrition; Children, Youth, Families; Community Development or related area, and three years of managerial and/or related professional work experience.

Major Responsibilities: Communications and Reporting (55%): 1) Prepare responses to questions and inquiries from the public and assist in building a positive image for UNCE, with a variety of publics, through appearances, speeches and written communications; 2) Serve as primary communications link for the timely dissemination of program information to Cooperative Extension faculty, staff, state specialists and administrators to inform them of grants and other forms of potential program support, program and professional development opportunities and other information that could assist in the further development and success of the organization; 3) Serve as the state program contact for all Agriculture, Natural Resources and some Nutrition subject areas, responding to regional and national inquiries and requests for reports, representing views of the state at various meetings, conferences and other gatherings, communicating program information to and from faculty and staff; 4) gather and compile data for federal, state, university and other reports for the Director, and develop/maintain online reporting systems to generate data necessary for required reporting; and 5) provide advice to the Director a wide variety of subjects such as policies, programs and planning and review or prepare related documents as directed by the Director. Program Development (25%): 1) Provide leadership for effective programming, primarily focused on working with assistant directors and department heads; 2) Develop competencies and opportunities for increased acquisition of external and federal competitive funds for the development of programming that meets identified needs; 3) Serve as State SARE Coordinator including preparation of annual reports and proposals; 4) Assist with special programs as the need may arise; 5) Identify and encourage opportunities where faculty can increase and enhance programming efforts by working with colleagues on campus, across county, area and state boundaries and in which Cooperative Extension programming and research can be joined in collaborative efforts; 6) Coordinate new faculty orientation and other UNCE professional development training as appropriate. Administration (20%): In absence of the Director, or at the Director’s direction, provide overall administrative leadership for Cooperative Extension; represent the Director at local, university, regional or national levels as necessary; and provide primary support for the Director, including input for the development of needed policies and procedures.

The successful candidate should have knowledge of: 1) Cooperative Extension; its mission, organizational form, values, approach to program development, organizational culture, funding arrangements and history; 2) the Land Grant System including linkages with other Universities, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, other Federal Departments, State Agencies, and local government entities; 3) higher education system and culture; 4) program development, needs assessment, and impact evaluation of educational programs in a non-formal university setting; 5) program assessment and reporting to university, State and/or Federal agencies; 6) state and federal laws and regulations concerning human resources management and administration and 7) public relations. Expected skills include: 1) a high level of organizational and facilitation skills, including the ability to formulate collaborative endeavors and stimulate team efforts; 2) human resources supervision/management; 3) excellent oral and written communication; 4) budget management; 5) proficiency in use of a personal computer and current software applications including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and email); and 6) effective analysis and decision-making and problem-solving skills. This position requires the ability to: gather an extensive amount of information and formulate into a concise written document; accomplish goals within higher education system and culture; maintain confidentiality of sensitive information; work and interact with a diverse population; interact effectively with faculty, administrative staff and other employees at all levels of responsibility; and be flexible and work under limited supervision with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

Schedule and Travel Requirements: Evening and weekend is periodically required, as is moderate travel throughout the state.

Compensation: Salary is negotiable within the Administrative Faculty Grade E range ($96,836-$225,952).
