The University of Washington is one of the nation's great public institutions, and its College of Engineering is one of its principal assets. Operating under the guidance of an ambitious strategic plan, the College has doubled the size of its student body over the past 10 years and anticipates further growth over the next 10. The College benefits from exceptional philanthropic support and sits at the heart of a corporate community with a nearly insatiable desire for its graduates. To build on this momentum, the College of Engineering seeks a dean to lead it to greater levels of academic excellence and recognition.
The new dean will inherit an academic unit in a strong position. Many of its schools, departments and centers are highly ranked nationally, and others have the immediate potential to achieve similar recognition. The College has a distinguished faculty dedicated to developing innovative solutions through research. Enrollments are strong, and during 2018-19 the College began directly admitting first-year students, a change in the University's long-standing approach that is designed to address increasing demand for UW Engineering degrees and to increase persistence to degree. The College is directly supported by the Washington State Legislature in recognition of the central role it plays in the region's social and economic vitality. Supported by robust resources both in the College of Engineering and in the University's exceptionally successful advancement operation, the College is currently raising approximately $60 million annually, has surpassed its goals for the University's current, $5-billion campaign and will soon launch a focused fundraising effort to build the first of two new buildings planned for the near future.
The new dean will possess an earned terminal degree in an engineering or engineering-related discipline, and a distinguished record of teaching and research commensurate with an appointment to the University of Washington College of Engineering faculty with the rank of professor with tenure. The dean will be committed to a diverse environment and will demonstrate a track record for enhancing diversity and inclusion in previous positions. Exceptional communication and listening skills are required, as is at least five years of increasingly responsible leadership and managerial experience in an environment of similar complexity. Prior experience advocating for philanthropic and legislative support is highly desirable. Experience in an environment in which units have substantial fiscal autonomy (i.e., activity based budgeting) is preferred.
