Key Responsibilities

The Director is expected to:

  • Establish and maintain productive relationships across campus to not only assess needs and help OIR clients understand the use and limitations of available data and information, but to establish an OIR-wide culture of proactive and anticipatory responses and tools that supplement dynamic resilient systems supporting strategic University goals;
  • Lead a team of IR professionals as a hands-on colleague when needed, and be accountable for collaborating with other University data stewards to ensure common data standards/practices and the highest levels of data integrity across campus.
  • Provide thought leadership and technical contributions for new and future University-wide initiatives aimed at enhancing data architecture and governance, robust data warehousing and blending, high UX and self-service analytical tools, and enterprise intelligence that will provide decision support for administrators, faculty, staff, our Board of Trustees, and students;
  • Serve as a contributing member of the vanguard advancing Clemson’s strategy where data, information, and wisdom become key university assets in league with its people, facilities, and finances.
Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a Master’s degree from an accredited institution in a relevant discipline, and five or more years’ experience in data reporting or analytics, data warehousing and querying, research design, and leadership roles (titled or untitled) in an office of institutional research or similar department.

Preferred in addition to the minimum qualifications is a Ph.D. from an accredited institution and previous management/supervisory role in an IR or related office and proficiency with one or more skills related to data querying and blending, dashboarding, self-service BI tools, coding/scripting, or econometric analyses.

Additional Skills and Competencies:

  • Demonstrated understanding of best practices for the operation of an office of institutional research or enterprise intelligence/decision support in an institution of higher education, possess broad cognizance of higher education trends that would impact the operation of such a unit, and be familiar with transactional systems and data structures relevant to higher education institutions;
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to convey nuanced and complex information to wide audiences;
  • Proficiency with desktop office suites, ad hoc reporting or visualization tools, and intermediate inferential statistics;
  • Ability to execute the duties of the Director with a high level of accountability, independence, confidentiality, discretion, and act with the highest level of professional ethics;
  • Evince a passionate curiosity, commitment to professional growth of themselves and their staff, and a relentless commitment to aligning OIR resources to the University’s mission and strategic plan for the benefit of its students.
