Position Summary:

The Director of Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS ) reports to both the Director of Compliance/SWA and the Academic Support Programs (ASP ) Director. SASS is an integral part of student-athlete retention and graduation efforts. This position is responsible for the overall leadership and oversight for all functional areas of the SASS program at the University of Idaho. The director provides leadership in implementing best practices and seeking innovative approaches for student-athlete academic support and academic advising, while cultivating the intellectual and career interests of the student-athletes served. The director spearheads the successful development and application of department policies and procedures to ensure compliance with NCAA , conference, and University rules and regulations. This applies to policies and procedures as they pertain to student-athlete academic progress toward degree. The director is responsible for hiring, training, supervising and evaluating professional staff, 20-30 tutors, and two graduate assistants; budget planning and management; annual report preparations; teaching the Life Skills for Student-Athletes course, collaboration with other ASP units and campus partners to provide excellent service to student-athletes; guiding the development and implementation of the University/unit vision and goals; and coordinating program assessment and evaluation. The incumbent will participate in department of athletics leadership team.

Minimum Qualifications:

•Master’s degree in education, counseling, sport administration, or other related field.

•Five years related full-time professional experience.

•Two years of experience effectively supervising the work of full-time employee(s) in a college athletics environment.

•Work experience that demonstrates strong time management, excellent written and verbal communication, and strong organizational skills.

•Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse educational, cultural, and economic backgrounds.

•Demonstrated genuine concern and interest for the welfare of student-athletes.

•Strong working knowledge of, and ability to follow university and NCAA rules and regulations.

•Ability to collaborate and work effectively with student-athletes, coaches, campus partners, and administration.

• Working knowledge of academic success strategies (study skills, time management, organization, test taking, note taking, etc.).

•Knowledge/experience in computerized student records; familiarity with spreadsheets, and database word processing.

•Availability to travel with teams and to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

•Doctoral degree in counseling, education, sport administration, or other related area.

•Experience with the administration of NCAA Division I academic services.

• Strong working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations related to transfer student-athletes.

• Understanding of NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR ) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR ).

•Experience with coordinating and directing learning assistance programs for at-risk student-athletes and student-athletes with diagnosed learning disabilities.

•Experience with academic advising.

•Teaching experience in higher education.

•Experience developing technical written materials such as policies, technical manuals or rules/regulations.

•Familiarity with academic assessment tools, current research, and learning strategies.

•N4A active membership.
