Director of Veterans Services

Director of Veterans Services, Student Affairs, South Dakota State University. 

-  Provides the overall leadership and management of the Veterans Affairs Office. 

-  Manages operations, associated budget, resource allocation, staff supervision, program design, strategic planning, and grant funding.

-  Provides training to faculty and staff.

-  Collaborates with local, county, and Federal agencies that assist military-affiliated and veteran students with disabilities, as well as develop programs that promote student veteran transition to the campus, retention, and success.

-  Hire, train, and supervise the Coordinator for Veterans Affairs and all VA work-study positions to ensure compliance with VA Regulations and training objectives.

-  Maintains compliance with the Department of Defense Memorandum of Understanding.

The Veterans Affairs Office and Resource Center assists military veterans, their family members, and their survivors in obtaining all federal and state educational benefits and entitlements they have earned by serving in the United States military, and provides guidance and support services that will aid veterans in their transition to academic and civilian life.

-  Bachelor’s Degree in a wide range of fields including the Social Sciences, Behavioral Sciences, or a closely related field.

-  At least one year of experience working with veterans’ issues.

-  Excellent oral and written communication skills.

-  Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.

-  Strong interpersonal skills.

-  Ability to use reason in logically and consistently applying Federals laws and regulations to individual situations.


-  Previous United States military service and honorable discharge (if applicable);

-  Experience operating within the complexities of a university setting;

-  Experience working with other military-affiliated individuals, veterans, and veterans with disabilities;

-  Experience writing proposals for grant funding in support of educational projects and initiatives.
