This position is designed to provide a new graduate veterinarian experience in: performing spay/neuter and other procedures such as dentistry and amputation; preventive medicine in various shelter settings; as well as experience in teaching and overseeing current veterinary junior and senior students performing cadaveric surgery, anesthesia and basic spay/neuter techniques. Teaching environments will vary from OSU CVHS hospital to OSU-OKC Vet Tech program, Tulsa Animal Welfare and the local area Stillwater shelters. Inclusive Dates of Internship: June 2017 - June 2018. Working hours will be whatever is needed to accomplish targeted responsibilities. Travel to Oklahoma City, Tulsa and surrounding Stillwater area will be expected.
Minimum qualifications: D.V.M. Licensed to practice in the state of Oklahoma. Experienced and competent at routine spay neuter surgical procedures, induction and maintenance of anesthesia, knowledge of common anesthetic drugs used in shelter programs. Responsible for overseeing patient recovery and assessing patients for discharge. Knowledge of basic preventive medicine vaccination protocols, parasitacides, and common medical techniques. Attention to detail and record keeping in drug logs, medical records, and surgical reports. Experience in safe handling and understanding the behavior of domestic or feral dogs and cats. Experience in animal welfare and shelter operations is a plus. Communication skills in one-on-one and small group activity. Effective, empathetic verbal communication with understanding of constructive teaching and evaluation. Interpersonal skills must show professional, nonbiased teamwork. Managing varied relationships with successful facilitation, collaboration and cooperation and able to work calmly under stressful situations. Understanding of the necessity of euthanasia in shelter decisions and the wisdom in choices shelters must make for financial, space and animal welfare.
