The lab manager will work with Dr. Top and her team of researchers involved in an NIH -funded project on understanding the coevolutionary and molecular mechanisms by which antibiotic resistance plasmids and bacteria adapt to each other. The research technician will use bacteriology, molecular biology, and high throughput genome sequencing techniques to evolve and genetically construct bacteria, sequence their genomes, and clone genes of interest for protein work by our collaborator.
This position will also manage the daily operations of the lab, a Biosafety Level 2 facility. These duties will include training and overseeing experiments in the lab, ordering and budgeting for supplies, and will be responsible for maintenance, and smooth operation of the laboratory, with compliance with laboratory chemical and biological safety regulations for all members of the lab.
•Education: B.S. degree in microbiology, molecular biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, biology or related field
•Experience: Two years of experience performing laboratory research in microbiology or molecular biology
•Good knowledge of scientific principles; laboratory safety practices; laboratory terminology, equipment, materials, and procedures; and, the fundamental laboratory methods relating to biology
•Demonstrated ability to (1) perform specialized tasks and laboratory techniques specific to the needs of the position, including sterile technique and work with DNA purification and manipulation; (2) operate, troubleshoot and resolve basic problems with laboratory protocols or equipment; (3) use good interpersonal and communication skills; (4) work with computers, especially word processing, spreadsheets and file management
•Physical ability to: perform assigned duties; work safely with potentially harmful or volatile, corrosive biological and chemical agents in a laboratory setting
•Experience working in a research laboratory for four or more years, including experience with responsibility for equipment maintenance and troubleshooting and inventory and record keeping.
•Masters’ degree in field related to research area
•Experience working with microbial systems, molecular biology procedures such as cloning and sequencing, and data analysis.
•Demonstrated laboratory management experience, including implementation of safety and other university policies
•Experience training and supervising undergraduate students
•Desire and motivation to contribute to a multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional research project
•Willingness and ability to learn new skills and techniques quickly, perform tasks with diligence and accuracy; work independently as well as cooperatively with others in a laboratory environment
•Demonstrated ability to compile written information for reports
•Working knowledge of R or other programming language, or bioinformatics analysis software
