Open Rank, Tenured/Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Public Health and Urban Planning

The UCLA Departments of Environmental Health Sciences and Urban Planning invite applications for a tenured or tenure-track joint faculty appointment in public health and urban planning. We seek a bold, innovative thinker who is, or soon will be, a leading scholar of the linkages between urban environments and health outcomes, and how policies and other interventions can improve these outcomes. Attractive candidates for this interdisciplinary position might study: health benefits of green infrastructure and the natural environment, including water and ecosystem infrastructure; or how urban design features and transportation systems affect environmental exposures and health; or the health effects of land use and housing patterns, including environment and health in low-income and/or minority communities.

We welcome applicants from a wide array of backgrounds, particularly those with multi-disciplinary backgrounds, who can bridge the disciplines of urban planning and public health, as well as those whose work includes both domestic and global perspectives. The successful candidate will be able to contribute to the curricula in both departments.

The Department of Urban Planning hosts 16 tenured/tenure-track faculty, and 148 Master’s and 38 PhD students in highly selective programs. The Department has a tradition of intellectual leadership in urban studies, and our faculty, students, and alumni have long been known for their passionate commitment to social justice and progressive planning ideals. The Department of Environmental Health Sciences has 10 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 52 master’s students, and 16 PhD students in program in Environmental Health Sciences. The Department is dedicated to studying the links between health and the environment, and educating scientists and public health leaders who can design science-based policies to address current and future environmental health challenges. The two departments offer a concurrent master’s degree program in Environmental Health Sciences and Urban & Regional Planning.

Los Angeles is a global city renowned for its dynamism, robust economy, rich cultural diversity, and spectacular climate. The Luskin School of Public Affairs is home to the departments of Public Policy, Social Welfare, and Urban Planning, as well as six research centers and a new undergraduate major in Public Affairs. The Fielding School of Public Health is home to five departments—Biostatistics, Community Health Sciences, Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology, and Health Policy and Management—and has 14 affiliated research centers.

UCLA offers competitive salary and attractive benefits packages, including a housing assistance program for new faculty members. The University of California seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce as a reflection of our commitment to serve the people of California, to maintain the excellence of the University, and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives, and ways of knowing and learning. The two Departments are committed to diversity and excellence in our faculty, students, and scholarship. We especially encourage candidates who share and can contribute to this commitment; accordingly, a statement that addresses past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion must be included in the application materials.

All applicants should hold a PhD at the time of appointment and demonstrate exceptional promise for scholarship and teaching. Applicants and appointments at all levels will be considered. The expected start date is July 1, 2019. All materials must be submitted via UCLA Academic Recruit by Thursday, November 1, 2018, to be guaranteed full consideration.
