Reference and Instruction Librarian
The primary assignment of the Reference and Instruction Librarian is to provide reference, instruction, and collection development, with particular emphasis on resources and services that support international students and the University`s programs in public affairs and related disciplines, such as political science, criminal justice, public administration, and homeland security. To carry out this assignment, major responsibilities include: providing assistance to faculty, students and others to facilitate access to library materials and services for the retrieval of information; acting as a selector for materials in the areas of public affairs and criminal justice; acting as a liaison to the School of Public Affairs; developing and presenting course-related instruction and providing instructive reference services as required to meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff; performing database searches and facilitating access to information in electronic formats; assessing needs and recommending and initiating services that support the School of School of Public Affairs' programs, including the Penn State World Campus program in Homeland Security, and/or other programs as appropriate; and participating in the development of library outreach services. The Reference and Instruction Librarian serves in the coordinator role of working as a liaison with the office of International Student Support Services at Penn State Harrisburg to provide special outreach to international students. In addition, the Reference and Instruction Librarian participates in activities related to library, college, and university governance. This includes developing relationships and programs to promote equity and inclusion in an increasingly diverse Campus and University environment. Requirements: This position requires a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution (or equivalent); experience with reference and bibliographic instruction; demonstrated knowledge of academic and library social media applications; strong knowledge of print and electronic information resources; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively; strong commitment to diversity, equity, respect and inclusion; facility with emerging technologies; and the potential to achieve the requirements for tenure and promotion in the areas of librarianship, research, and service. Some evening and/or weekend work is required.
Preferred qualifications include at least one year of post MLS experience with relevant reference and instruction experience at an academic or research library. An advanced degree or graduate level study in education or international subject disciplines is desirable. Early career librarians are encouraged to apply.
