Position Summary:

The University of Idaho College of Art and Architecture in Boise is seeking researchers who are enthusiastic about high performance buildings, are technically savvy, love working with students, have a strong desire to work collaboratively, and are determined to make a difference in the world. Appointments to begin August 20, 2018.

The Integrated Design Lab (IDL ) at the University of Idaho in Boise is seeking a non-tenure track Research Assistant Professor of Architecture to support the building simulation and professional technical assistance outreach activities at the IDL . Since the IDL is part of the College of Art and Architecture and affiliated with the College of Engineering, the successful candidate will be expected to teach graduate architecture and engineering courses such as Applied Thermodynamics, Building Performance Simulation for Integrated Design, and other related technical courses. The successful candidate will be expected to secure and conduct research, deliver technical assistance and project based education; they will work in cooperation with IDL faculty, staff, and professional design teams to facilitate the integration of climate responsive daylighting, electric lighting and mechanical systems design in new construction projects across the Pacific Northwest (and beyond). Other responsibilities of this position include: offering energy efficiency education and trainings to architects and engineers through a national educational program, supporting the efforts of Lab Director in execution of daily office staff management and budgetary forecasting, developing existing research areas and seeking out funding for new avenues of research in order to broaden and enrich the capabilities of the IDL , publishing a minimum of two research papers in peer-reviewed academic journals annually.

All candidates should demonstrate excellent verbal and written, communication skills (strong graphic communication skills are a plus).

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Good knowledge of: research methods, integrated design practices, building energy systems and technologies, building simulation software (EnergyPlus preferred).

Experience: writing reports or materials, compiling and analyzing data and drawing conclusions, using software or spreadsheet software to perform analysis, interpreting and communicating (orally and in writing) material into information usable by a diverse target audience, teaching students of architecture and/or mechanical engineering, interpreting energy simulation results to support professional practice and academic research. Demonstrated ability to: help secure external grants and contracts, develop and support research programs, establish and maintain collaborative and cooperative scientific and professional relationships.

(note: some positions may require a valid driver’s license, an ability to operate a vehicle, and/or a capacity to conduct field research)

Preferred Qualifications:

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS : Education and Experience: Education or experience desired, but not required, such as a college degree or four years’ experience.

• Demonstrated ability to provide technical assistance and analysis in climate and building loads, daylighting, electric light, and HVAC systems design and sizing.

• Ability to conduct comparative analysis of building design alternatives.

• Demonstrated competence in written and oral communication.

• Experience in a Lab environment consistent with Building Science programs at Universities with Masters of Architecture programs.

• Experience in a professional architectural of engineering office.

• Experience teaching in a university setting.

• Licensure as architect or professional engineer.

• Competency with statistical analysis methods.
