An individual with skills in molecular virology is needed to assist in molecular genetic research of plant viruses. The job includes biological and molecular characterization of viruses infecting potato and other crops important for the State of Idaho. The person in this position will be responsible for characterization of the gene or genes responsible for pathogenicity and symptom severity in plant viruses, like Potato virus Y (PVY ), Beet curly top virus (BCTV ), and other plant viruses as needed, biologically through indicator tests and reverse genetics using infectious copies of virus genomes, and through whole genome sequencing. The incumbent will be responsible for generation of and manipulation with infectious clones of viruses, designing and generating specific mutations in virus infectious clones, testing their viability, replication level, and symptom expression through whole-plant assays in foliage and in tubers, and utilization of molecular techniques to characterize genetic changes. The incumbent will type virus isolates using biological and molecular procedures to determine their pathotypes. The incumbent will take part in studies of virus cell-to-cell and systemic movement using tagged virus vectors. Responsibilities include designing experimental procedures, molecular characterization, whole plant assays, data analysis and preparation of manuscripts for publication. The scientist will be under the direction of UI faculty and will be expected to work in collaboration with other scientists, scientific aides, research staff, and graduate and undergraduate student(s) in the program.
Education: Masters of Science degree in molecular biology, plant pathology or closely related field with emphasis in the utilization of molecular techniques for virus identification and genetic analysis of virus isolates with 2 years of research experience OR Bachelors of Science degree in related field with 5 years of research experience.
Research Experience: Experience/familiarity with potato viruses, demonstrated ability to conduct experiments with plant virus-based vectors utilizing reverse genetics. Familiarity with molecular techniques, such as cDNA cloning, primer development, PCR , DNA sequencing, etc.
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a group.
Ph.D in plant virology
