The employee will manage the day to day running of the diagnostic lab and support extension projects. The employee will be responsible for managing scientific experiments in support of general laboratory research and extension goals of understanding infectious diseases of plants. The employee will also undertake diagnostic work and consult with growers and agronomists on plant disease issues, and will functionally manage technicians and students working in the lab.
Requires an M.S. degree in an agricultural or biological science related field or a B.S. degree in agricultural or biological science related field and experience totaling approximately 3 years.
Willingness to travel overnight occasionally; ability to commute to rural locations.
Must be capable of interacting in a positive and professional manner with the public.
Ability to interpret the relevant scientific literature and integrate reported research with proposed research.
Demonstrated ability to work independently in laboratory-based tasks. Ability to collect, compile and prepare data for research reports.
Must be able to supervise employees.
Ability to perform assigned laboratory duties.
Practical knowledge of basic crop production practices.
Must possess good interpersonal skills; good written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated skills with computers.
Must hold a valid US driver’s license.
Operate a computer to include Microsoft Office Professional Programs.
Plant disease diagnostic experience.
Experience in producing written documents relevant to the communication of laboratory results, including scientific papers, conference abstracts, and progress reports.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
Must be willing to work with toxic, volatile or corrosive chemicals and carcinogenic substances.
Willingness and ability to work with fungal plant pathogens.
Ability to do field work collecting plant and soil samples.
