Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development. This position offers an extraordinary opportunity to a bold and inspirational leader with intellectual breadth, strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated expertise in research-driven programs and policies, experience developing and leveraging partnerships, and success leading diverse, complex teams and/or organizations. He/she will bring together researchers from diverse backgrounds to enhance the university’s research collaborations locally, nationally, and internationally.

About UNC Charlotte: UNC Charlotte is North Carolina’s urban research university, the only doctoral-granting research institution in a vibrant region of over 2.3 million people. UNC Charlotte is a Carnegie Foundation Community Engagement campus and was recently named an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University by APLU. The University leverages its location in the state’s largest city to offer internationally competitive programs of research and creative activity; exemplary undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs; and a focused set of community engagement initiatives that address the cultural, economic, educational, environmental, health, and social needs of the greater Charlotte region. Research and Economic Development at UNC Charlotte: Research is a cornerstone of UNC Charlotte’s mission with awards exceeding $50 million during the past two years. The University supports several National Science Foundation Industry-University Cooperative Research Centers (NSF I/UCRC) and numerous interdisciplinary centers, institutes, and core research programs. UNC Charlotte is also committed to supporting and strengthening the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the Charlotte region. The University’s Partnership, Outreach, and Research to Accelerate Learning (PORTAL) building, a 96,000 square foot lease-space facility dedicated to research partnership, innovation, and economic development, is home to 23 domestic and international companies and the University’s small business, technology, and entrepreneurship support units in addition to one of the most productive technology transfer programs of its kind, ranking 5th nationally per $10 million in research for new startups. The University’s center for entrepreneurship, Ventureprise, was the first NSF I-Corps technology commercialization and customer discovery program site in the Carolinas. To date, the I-Corps program has supported 73 faculty and student teams. Ventureprise also oversees the University’s student incubator, the 49er Foundry, which currently houses ten student ventures. Construction projects underway at UNC Charlotte also continue to support research and economic development including a $60M interdisciplinary science and STEM teaching facility and a 226-bed campus hotel and conference center immediately adjacent to PORTAL.
