Position Summary:

The primary purpose of this job is to conduct the research necessary to assess the effectiveness of riparian buffers to protect critical stream functions in non fish-bearing streams in industrial timberlands in eastern Washington state. Job duties consist of installation and maintenance of automated environmental sensing and sampling equipment, detailed field surveys, data quality assurance/quality control, database management, budget management, and supervision of field research teams.

Minimum Qualifications:

- M.S. Degree in Natural Science, Computer Science, or Engineering discipline or a closely related field or a B.S. and minimum of 5 years of experience in natural resource data collection.

- At least one year of experience in natural resources or environmental data collection.

- Demonstrated experience supervising a small team of employees.

- Experience with automated environmental data collection or biophysical sampling and monitoring of riparian zones.

- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage project budgets.

- Possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive UI vehicles.

- Demonstrated ability to work independently and with an interdisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Coursework or experience in meteorology, hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, forestry, geology, ecology, computer or data science, or natural resources or closely related field.

- Experience with automated monitoring equipment and data telemetry, ideally systems comprised of Campbell Scientific, Inc. components.

- Ability to perform repetitive tasks while maintaining accuracy and excellent organizational skills to plan field campaigns and maintain financial records.

- Previous experience working in remote locations.

- Demonstrated experience managing environmental datasets with common software tools.

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

- Willingness and ability to camp for several days in remote areas and work in varied field conditions that will involve: 1) off-trail hiking up and down hills and in densely vegetated riparian zones, 2) carrying, lifting, or otherwise moving loads up to 30 pounds, and 3) skiing or snowshoeing to field sites in the winter to collect data.

- Willingness and ability to travel to remote field sites for 4-day sampling periods during the period from May through Oct.
