APLU Statement on Release of Task Force on Government Regulation of Higher Education’s Report

February 12, 2015

Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) President Peter McPherson today released the following statement regarding the release of the Task Force on Government Regulation of Higher Education’s Report.

“This report does a terrific job of laying out the complex maze of interwoven, redundant, and costly federal regulations and reporting requirements that colleges and universities currently confront while offering clear steps Congress can take to streamline them.  Certain rules are absolutely needed to protect students and taxpayers, but higher education has reached a point where many regulations have become counterproductive.

“Given the bipartisan nature of the unique request for this report from top members of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, we are optimistic that Congress will take a serious look at peeling back and consolidating many of the regulations cited in the report.

“We congratulate the Task Force on Government Regulation of Higher Education Co-Chairs Brit Kirwan and Nicholas Zeppos, the entire task force membership, and the staff at the American Council on Education for a job very well done.  And we also thank the senators involved for driving this effort, their interest in trying to identify ways to reduce these overly burdensome regulations, and for their plans to take subsequent action.  APLU was pleased to offer thoughts and ideas during the development of this report and we look forward to offering insight as the legislative process moves forward.”
