Washington, DC – Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) President Peter McPherson today testified on Capitol Hill as a public witness before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies. McPherson urged the panel to approve funding that would restore the year-round Pell grant program and increase investments for biomedical research at the National Institutes of Health. The following are the prepared remarks McPherson submitted to complement his testimony before the subcommittee.

Washington, DC – Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) President Peter McPherson today issued the following statement regarding tomorrow’s congressional convening of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) on Capitol Hill. The association’s membership includes 23 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), of which 21 are land-grant institutions (19 under the 1890 Morrill Act, two under the 1862 Morrill Act).

Washington, DC — In an effort to prevent low-income college students nearing graduation from dropping out, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and Temple University today announced they will work on a five-year project to improve and grow small-dollar completion grants aimed at ensuring such students complete their degree. The U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences (IES) is funding the $3.98 million grant, which will evaluate and work to enhance completion grants at up to 10 APLU member institutions.
