APLU named the winners of its four 2016 institutional awards at the APLU Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas, November 13-15. The awards recognize excellence in student success and degree completion; economic development; community engagement; as well as global learning, research, and engagement.

Last week, APLU President Peter McPherson sent a letter to President-elect Trump urging him to continue the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and to ensure personal information students provided in DACA applications are not used for immigration enforcement. This Obama administration executive action provides deferred status from deportation and the potential for work authorization to undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States before the age of 16, who have been in the U.S. continuously at least since 2007, and who have applied for and received the deferred status, among other requirements.

APLU President Peter McPherson joined Rush Holt, Chief Executive Officer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the heads of 27 other national scientific and higher education associations in sending a letter to President-elect Donald Trump urging him to quickly appoint a “nationally respected leader with appropriate engineering, scientific, management and policy skills” to serve as Assistant to the President for Science and Technology.

APLU and the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (USU) held a special session, Turning Points: Moving from Setback to Success, at the APLU Annual Meeting on Sunday, November 13, 2016 in Austin, Texas. This unique and innovative panel featured APLU institutions as they examined failures that triggered later successes in student access and degree completion.
