The Academy of Engagement Scholarship (ACES) inducted its inaugural class of fourteen members into the academy on Tuesday, October 7, at the Engagement Scholarship Consortium (ESC) 2014 Meeting in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The inaugural members all represent public research universities, and many of them have played leadership roles in advancing the outreach and engagement agenda of APLU and member universities.

Among the inaugural members of the academy are two APLU university leaders—President Diana Natalicio of University of Texas El Paso, and Chancellor Nancy Zimpher of SUNY. Also members of the ACES inaugural class are the current and immediate past chairs of APLU’s Council on Engagement and Outreach, Beth Velde of East Carolina University and Karen Bruns of Ohio State University.

The mission of the Academy of Community Engagement Scholarship is to serve the public good by recognizing and contributing to high quality scholarship that—in active collaboration with participating community partners—has a positive impact on complex societal needs and issues. Through the involvement of leading community engagement scholars and practitioners, and their most knowledgeable, collaborative, and effective community counterparts, ACES will explore critical and complex societal and community issues and provide recommendations, to inform local, regional, national, and international research and policy agendas.

APLU is pleased to be a founding partner of the Academy of Engagement Scholarship, and proud of the exemplary engagement work being undertaken at member universities. Partnerships with our universities’ communities, and the research and knowledge transfer that happen as part of those partnerships, are foundational to our public purposes. We congratulate the members of the inaugural class of ACES and thank them for leading this critical work.
