APLU In The News: June 2018

The journey to a degree these days has many types of passengers, from full-time enrollees, to transfer students, to those who stop out for a variety of reasons only to re-enroll at a later date. More than half of bachelor’s degree recipients attend more than one post-secondary institution, and two-thirds of community college students are enrolled part-time, according to National Student Clearinghouse data.

In recognition of its extraordinary community outreach initiatives, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) today selected Ball State University as one of four regional winners of the 2018 W.K. Kellogg Foundation Community Engagement Scholarship Award. As regional winners, Ball State, University of Florida, Texas Tech University, and Virginia Tech will represent and compete for the national C. Peter Magrath Community Engagement Scholarship Award, which will be announced during the APLU Annual Meeting November 11-13 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

On June 25, educational leaders from 100 campuses across the nation will travel to Richmond to witness VCU’s accomplishments and explore how universities can strengthen their communities and the democracy of this nation. The visiting leaders are members of two national organizations, the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities (APLU) and The Democracy Collaborative (TDC) Anchor Dashboard Cohort, convening at VCU for a conference examining the topic of “Creative Placemaking for Healthy Communities.” University leaders in economic and community engagement will explore partnerships engaged in the arts, health, and innovation. Through presentations, interactive sessions, and tours with community partners, participants will gain new insights into how universities as key anchor institutions can leverage interdisciplinary strategies to address complex social and economic challenges facing our communities.

Earlier this past week, Texas Tech University and the College of Education were identified by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) as one of four regional winners of the 2018 W.K. Kellogg Foundation Community Engagement Scholarship Award. As a recipient of this award, Texas Tech will compete with other regional winners – Ball State University, University of Florida and Virginia Tech – for the national C. Peter Magrath Community Engagement Scholarship Award. As dean of the Texas Tech University College of Education and principal investigator on the East Lubbock Promise Neighborhood (ELPN) grant, the work on this project has been the most rewarding of my career.

Dozens of universities are banding together with a new reporting system to keep tabs on Greek organizations in hopes of curbing hazing, sexual assault and alcohol abuse. Dozens of schools, including Penn State, Florida State and Louisiana State University, are supporting the creation on a scorecard for fraternities and sororities to track things like cumulative GPA, alcohol and hazing violations and chapter suspensions. The goal is to discern patterns, identify bad actors and provide leverage to hold national organizations to account.

A coalition of 500 research universities, scientific organizations and businesses released a progress reporttoday on a call for Congress and White House to support and improve innovation. The report praises increased congressional support for research but says more progress must be made. And it finds areas like U.S. visa policy an increasing concern. The release of the report comes three years after the groups called on the federal government to take action to back research and innovation.

Proponents for better data on whether and how college pays off for students saw a victory, if a small one, Thursday as the primary lobbying group for private nonprofit colleges inched closer to backing a new federal system that would give important information to students and policy makers.
