Committees formed by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and the Association of American Universities (AAU) to examine and affirm university policies and values regarding innovation, technology transfer, and commercialization today each released a set of principles and recommendations for institutions. The groups’ recommendations detail steps universities can take to ensure that institutional policies align with these principles and are readily transparent to the public, policymakers, and potential university partners.

The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) today named the University of Houston, University of Massachusetts Boston, Georgia Institute of Technology and North Carolina State University recipients of its second annual Innovation & Economic Prosperity (IEP) University Awards. The recognitions, which honor public universities actively engaged in and promoting regional economic development, were given during a special awards ceremony on the final day of the 127th APLU Annual Meeting underway in Orlando, Florida.

APLU has created a Task Force on Tenure, Promotion, and Technology Transfer (TPTT) that will focus on the appropriate consideration of technology transfer in faculty personnel decisions. (Note that the Task Force will work in parallel with the recently announced APLU Task Force on Managing University Intellectual Property.) After conducting a survey of current practices among APLU members, the TPTT Task Force will make recommendations to APLU and its membership on appropriate criteria and the assessment of technology transfer work as part of faculty advancement reviews.
