January 24, 2012—A۰P۰L۰U President Peter McPherson released the following statement on the 2012 State of the Union Address by President Barack Obama.
"America's public research universities applaud President Obama for making higher education and research a national priority investment for the country. Public university leaders feel strongly that containing tuition increases is important. State support for public universities has declined by 20 percent over the last decade, while the number of students has grown substantially. This combination has unquestionably driven increases in tuition."
"Containing costs is an imperative for public universities. University leaders must continue to strengthen quality while reducing costs by streamlining operations, helping students graduate on time, and strategically investing in online learning and new, high demand academic programs. For middle- and lower-income families, public universities have worked to provide the financial aid necessary to help students graduate."
"Universities are also key partners with the federal government in conducting the research that leads to new discoveries and the industries that emanate from those discoveries. The President’s continued commitment to science is necessary to grow our economy and keep our country globally competitive. We appreciate that both the Administration and Congress ultimately prioritized support for science last year and we look forward to working with our nation’s leaders to keep American a leader in innovation."
"One hundred and fifty years ago, President Abraham Lincoln and Vermont Senator Justin Smith Morrill envisioned a vibrant system of public universities serving the learning, discovery and societal needs of each state. This year, as we celebrate the founding of our public universities and the vital regional role they play in developing our workforce, creating knowledge and launching new industries, it is critical to develop a plan that provides students, families and universities with financial stability."
