Join more than 1,000 leaders from public higher education at the 126th APLU Annual Meeting November 10-12, 2013 in Washington, DC. The 2013 APLU Annual Meeting has become the premier event for public university leaders to share opinions on emerging topics, gain valuable professional development experience, and meet colleagues from across the nation. With the myriad challenges facing public higher education, it has never been more important for university officials to come together and discuss strategies for the future.
The 126th Annual Meeting will take place at the Marriott Wardman Park, 2660 Woodley Road NW, Washington, DC. Concurrent sessions begin Sunday at 8:30 a.m. The formal Opening General Session is at 5 p.m. The Annual Meeting will end with the Closing General Session on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m.
At the Opening General Session, Nancy Zimpher, chancellor of the State University of New York (SUNY) and president emeritus of the University of Cincinnati, will discuss the innovations taking place at one of the nation’s largest university systems. Mitch Daniels, former governor of Indiana and former director of the U.S. Office of Management Budget will provide insight from his first year as president of Purdue University. Together, they will help set the stage for much of the rest of the meeting. University of Maryland President Wallace Loh will moderate the discussion, which will look at the extraordinary pressures universities face in delivering their three-pronged mission of research, learning and engagement.
The Council of Presidents Luncheon will feature a keynote address from Christopher Edley, Jr., dean of the University of California, Berkeley School of Law. Edley is one of the foremost experts on affirmative action programs in America. In light of the Supreme Court ruling on Fisher v. Texas, and other key court decisions, Edley will speak about the future of diversity at public universities. General Richard Bowman Myers will keynote the Clodius Forum this year as America commemorates Veterans’ Day. General Myers will offer insightful remarks regarding the growing number of college students who are active military or recently returned veterans. General Myers is a retired four-star general in the United States Air Force and served as the sixteenth Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff – the highest ranking uniformed officer of the United States’ military – from 2001 to 2005. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack will give the closing address. Vilsack serves as the nation's 30th Secretary of Agriculture. As leader of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), he is working hard to strengthen the American agricultural economy, build vibrant rural communities and create new markets for the tremendous innovation of rural America.
