The Bernard M. Gordon Learning Factory’s mission is to bring the real-world into the classroom by providing senior undergraduate engineering students with practical, hands-on experience through industry-sponsored and client-based capstone design projects. The Learning Factory is both a state-of-the-art prototyping facility and a unique learning experience at Penn State.

Liaison Technologies is a cloud-based data management and integration company headquartered in Atlanta, GA. Since 2000, this privately-held company has expanded its reach to Finland, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and since 2010, Carbondale, Illinois. Liaison Technologies contacted executive director of the Southern Illinois University Research Park, about his desire to partner with the Carbondalebased university to kick-off Liaison’s rural-sourcing initiative.

Flood recovery must coincide with efforts to increase economic development within a framework for community revitalization. This is what synergistic design can offer from a large-scale perspective. An example here at SIU is the community recovery and rebuilding efforts like the recent community redevelopment project, the Olive Branch Recovery and Rebuilding Initiative, and its extensions like the Alexander County Think-Tank.

Jackson County, Illinois, in the heart of one of the richest coal deposits in the United States. At the same time, Environmental Protection Agency's regulations of coal-burning by-products have severely dampened production of these high sulfur deposits, challenging faculty researchers at SIU to examine alternate technologies for both energy production and coal utilization. One emerging small business, Thermaquatica, Inc., has discovered and pioneered a process that converts coal and other organic solids into water-soluble products.

Texas Tech and more than 75 regional partners have come together to improve a part of our community that is plagued by low performing schools, limited health care, crime, drugs, inadequate housing, high teen pregnancy and the highest child abuse rate in the State of Texas. East Lubbock is one of the poorest and most underserved neighborhoods in the state.

The Texas Tech University International Center for Food Industry Excellence (ICFIE) started its work in 1999 with the mission to provide innovation, research/evaluation and technology transfer throughout all aspects of the food continuum—production, harvest, processing, distribution, retail, food service and consumer. ICFIE is a transdisciplinary center between the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, the College of Human Sciences and the TTU Health Sciences Center.
