Working with institutional leaders and content experts from over 80 institutions and national partners, the project has already made great strides with its three objectives for the project.
APLU is focusing its efforts in three areas over this initial two-years of NSF’s INCLUDES Pilot:
Institutional Self-Assessment for Inclusive Faculty Recruitment, Hiring, & Retention: We developed a model to help institutions more effectively recruit, hire, retain, and support faculty from traditionally underrepresented populations within STEM. That model was then transformed into an institutional self-assessment tool to guide campus teams in their assessment of institutional strengths and areas for improvement.
Identifying & Sharing Promising, Evidence-Based Strategies: We launched the STEM-OP: A Survey to Expand and Maximize Opportunity in the Professoriate to identify a series of transformative institutional activities aimed at increasing participation along the STEM pathways toward the professoriate.
The information collected from institutions participating in the STEM-OP will create the foundation of a curated case of evidence-based strategies institutions can employ to increase the success of underrepresented groups in the STEM pathway. Institutions doing work in this area are encouraged to participate in the survey.
Evaluating Current Data Sources & Metrics to Track Progress: We’re researching and detailing the adequacy and coverage of current data sources and metrics available to track the progress and success of STEM students from entry into postsecondary education through the professoriate.
