Susan Johnson joined APLU as the Associate Vice-President for International Programs in the winter of 2019. She comes to us from the University of California, Davis, where she most recently served as the Program Director for the Borlaug Leadership Enhancement in Agriculture Program (Borlaug LEAP), expanding the program's reputation during her thirteen-year tenure and increasing funding to over $1 million annually.
Prior to her time with Borlaug LEAP, Susan served in an associates directorial capacity with a number of programs at UC Davis, including the Afghanistan Pastoral Engagement, Adaptation and Capacity Enhancement (PEACE) Project, the Global Livestock Collaborative Research Support Program (CRSP), as well as the Small Ruminant CRSP. In her time at UC Davis, Susan worked collaboratively with APLU as a consultant to develop communication materials, and to plan and hold conference proceedings.
Susan has taught English in Prague, Czech Republic, and has resided in Germany, France, Switzerland, Guatemala, and Italy. She received her Masters of Arts in International Administration from the School for International Training in Brattleboro, VT, and her B.A. in German from California State University, Fullerton. She also has received certificates of language competencies in both French and Germany from the Université de Paris– Sorbonne in Paris, France, and Ruprecht-Karls Universität, in Heidelberg, Germany respectively.
With over twenty years of domestic and international experience with USAID and university research collaborations, Susan brings a valuable wealth of experience in agriculture and development as well as program management to the APLU International Programs team.
