Budget

APLU monitors and scrutinizes federal agency and program budgets of relevance to the higher education and scientific research community. Each year, CGA staff track and analyze the university community priorities within the President’s Budget Request to Congress and the Budget Resolutions arising from the House and Senate.

FY2018

President Trump released his FY2018 budget request on May 23, 2017. The budget request outlines the administration’s agency and program funding requests. The budget request proposes a $54 billion increase for national defense discretionary budget authority and a reduction of $54 billion for nondefense discretionary programs. It proposes significant funding reductions for a number of areas, including higher education and research programs. APLU’s analysis of the administration’s FY2018 budget request can be found here.

The APLU appropriations chart for FY2018 has also been updated to reflect the Administration’s budget proposal.

FY2017

President Obama released his FY2017 Budget Request to Congress on February 9, 2016.The President’s $4.15 trillion budget, while essentially flat when compared to the final FY2016 budget, proposes new investments in a number of areas, including research and higher education. The budget follows last year’s budget agreement for the discretionary spending caps and proposes that Congress pass legislation to provide mandatory spending to fund many of these new investments.
