About This Role:

The Rife Lab/Innovation Lab for Crop Improvement in the Department of Plant Pathology is seeking an app developer to design and code advanced Android phone and tablet apps.

Specific duties include:

• Design, build and improve advanced Android phone and tablet apps. This position will require application development, unit testing, and basic quality assurance. Must be able to write clean, stable, and well-documented code. Implement and test code for robustness, usability, performance, and reliability. Rapidly fix bugs and solve new programming and conceptual problems including deriving improved and novel approaches for phenotypic data collection through improved user interfaces and automated analysis.

• Design and develop novel algorithms and approaches for phenotypic data collection through improved user interfaces and automated image analysis.

• Foster relationships and collaborate with diverse, international teams to define, design, and ship new features. Communicate with collaborators to understand limitations with current tools, define user needs and requirements, and determine how to implement new tools.

• Contribute to an environment that fosters diversity, collegiality, and the ability to work in a multi-cultural setting.

• Present research findings from the project and research developments at scientific conferences and stakeholder meetings.

What You'll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

• B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or closely related discipline

• 3 years experience, including 2+ years of programming experience in Java

• Knowledge of Android frameworks

• Solid foundation in computer science, data structures, and algorithms

• Experience optimizing code for performance

• Experience with code version control (Git)

• Experience working with Android Studio IDE

Preferred Qualifications:

• MS or in computer science or related field

• 3+ years of Android mobile app development

• Experience with image processing and GPU acceleration

• Experience working in a team environment

• Experience working with external APIs and RESTful services

• Independent judgment and advanced problem solving

• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written skills

• Strong commitment to expanding and fostering diversity

• Ability to prioritize and balance multiple projects to meeting timelines
