Assistant Athletic Trainer

South Dakota State University (SDSU) is an NCAA Division I institution located in Brookings, South Dakota. SDSU competes in The Summit League for all sports except Football (Missouri Valley Football Conference), Wrestling (Big XII Conference), and Equestrian (National Collegiate Equestrian Association).

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Assistant Athletic Trainer will assist the sports medicine staff with administering athletic training services for 19 men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports teams. Duties include, but not limited to, work with and under the supervision of the Medical Director and Team Physicians; instruct in CAATE entry level athletic training programs as a preceptor; supervise undergraduate and graduate athletic training students; assist with providing primary sport coverage for football; evaluate and administer first aid to the injured student-athletes; coordinate referrals and maintain communication with athletic health care team and coaches; administer therapeutic exercise and modalities under supervision of a physician; and administrative duties.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training, Athletic Administration or Sports Science by application date;
  • Minimum one year experience in athletic training;
  • At least one year experience supervising athletic training students;
  • BOC certification for athletic training;
  • CPR and First Aid certified;
  • Effective communication (oral, written and interpersonal) skills;
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills;
  • Demonstrated computer application skills.


  • Master’s degree in Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, Exercise Science or Administration;
  • Division I intercollegiate experience;
  • Eligible for state license in South Dakota;
  • Experience working with DI football;
  • Experience with team travel responsibilities;
  • Experience with supply ordering/monitoring;
  • Knowledge and/or understanding of medical records following HIPAA and FERPA and Sportsware;
  • Knowledge and/or understanding of medical insurance.

SALARY: Contingent upon education and experience.
