Assistant Dean, Agriculture & Natural Resources/Community Economic Development


The Assistant Dean is responsible to the Dean of the University of Tennessee Extension. Responsibilities include:  

• Providing leadership and direction to the agriculture, natural resources and community economic development agents, specialists, and programs.  

• Working closely with department heads, specialists, and regional agriculture program leaders in the overall program planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating statewide Extension and outreach programs in agriculture, natural resources, and community economic development.  

• Providing leadership and oversight to budget development and management.  

• Providing leadership and direction for agent and specialist development including in-service training, professional development, and effective outreach efforts.  

• Providing direct supervision and administrative direction to the Directors of the Center for Profitable Agriculture and the Soil, Plant and Pest Center.  

• Providing leadership for obtaining extramural funding including grants, contracts, and gifts to support Extension educational programs.  

• Coordinating, developing, and maintaining effective working relationships with other university departments and external organizations, state and federal agencies and commodity groups.  

• Cooperating with the UT Extension Assistant Dean of Family & Consumer Sciences, Director and 4-H State Program Leader, and Tennessee State University (TSU) Extension Agriculture and Natural Resource Program Leader on program efforts.  

• Assisting the Dean of UT Extension in other tasks that may be assigned.  

• Champions a culture of engagement and belonging by providing leadership in an environment that actively promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion.  

• The Assistant Dean will be working with our Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.  

• Coordinating UT Extension agriculture, natural resources, and community economic development programs with Tennessee State University Extension.  

• Providing leadership for a program of activities that meets the needs of eligible clientele regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, pregnancy, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, physical or mental disability, genetic information, veteran status, and parental status, or any other characteristic protected by federal or state law.


• Earned doctorate in agricultural sciences or natural resources, or closely related field of study. 

• Work experience which has demonstrated communication, public relation, management, and decision-making skills necessary to successfully perform the duties of the position. 

• Demonstrated effective leadership and administrative experience for the duties and responsibilities of the position. 

• Demonstrated success in grant and contract efforts.  

• Knowledge of and commitment to equal employment opportunity, affirmative action, and diversity. 

• Experience in budgetary oversight and management.  

• Experience or previous employment with Cooperative Extension Service. 

• Preference will be given to applicants that hold a PhD in agricultural sciences or natural resources and have qualifications for rank of full professor with tenure.
