Assistant Extension Administrator- ANR
Salary: Commensurate with education and experience

Primary Purpose of Position:

Cooperative Extension’s Assistant Administrator for Agricultural and Natural Resources (ANR) provides leadership and coordination for the development and implementation of statewide agriculture and natural resources programs aimed at fulfilling the needs of small-scale, limited resource and minority farmers and landowners throughout the state of North Carolina. The Assistant Administrator ensures that the programs align with and fulfill the missions and objectives of Cooperative Extension, the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES), and the North Carolina Cooperative Extension System. The position is a member of Cooperative Extension’s leadership team and is responsible for managing a team of Extension specialists, associates and administrative support staff. The Assistant Administrator will ensure the ANR unit achieves a comprehensive and collaborative statewide ANR program that impacts the economic, environmental or social conditions of small, socially-disadvantaged, and minority farmers in North Carolina through collaboration with county agents and agriculture technicians and partnership with CAES faculty and other stakeholders.

The Assistant Administrator position (1) provides leadership for programmatic activities within the Agriculture and Natural Resources unit by determining needs for educational programs, products, events, activities, training and grant proposals that impact small, socially-disadvantaged, minority farmers in North Carolina; (2) coordinates, with NC State Extension program leaders to identify specific ANR program areas and programmatic responsibilities for which the Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T will provide leadership, thereby reducing program duplication and enhancing program collaboration; (3) collaborates and develops partnerships with the teaching, research and Extension (state and county) faculty and staff at N.C. A&T and NC State, and at other Land-Grant Universities in addition to governmental and non-governmental agencies to secure additional support and leverage resources for enhanced impact; (4) ensures compliance with federal/state, civil rights and affirmative action plans and overall effectiveness of state programs relative to their economic, environmental or social impact; (5) utilizes effective visionary planning, which involves others, to determine high priority ANR programs for the Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T, and (6) Establish continuous assessment and improvement plans to ensure responsiveness to issues affecting small, socially-disadvantaged, minority farmers in North Carolina and measurement/documentation of program impacts.

Minimum Requirements:

Earned Ph.D./Ed.D. by date of hire in an agriculture or natural resources discipline (plant, animal, agriculture business management, farm safety) adult education or other pertinent related fields.
• A minimum of seven years of experience working effectively in a community-based educational program or the Extension system at the state and/or local level. Essential experience includes:
• Demonstrated ability in designing, implementing, evaluating and reporting impactful community-based, non-formal educational programs
• Evidence of supervision of a team of professional and support employees (5+)
• Evidence of resource development and management
• Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills
• Knowledge of Extension’s educational delivery systems and other aspects of the land grant system
• Ability to identify and build on the strengths of the organization and staff
• Strong leadership skills, including experience in coaching, team-building, resource management, and partnership development.

Preferred Years of Experience, Skills, Training, Education:

• Experienced Cooperative Extension professional with a successful record of program development in support of local/county, regional and/or statewide agricultural and natural resources plan of work aimed at improving economic vitality of small scale farmers and land owners.
• Earned Ph.D./Ed.D. by date of hire in an agriculture or natural resources discipline (plant, animal, agriculture business management, farm safety
• A minimum of 10 or more years of leadership experience working effectively Cooperative Extension/Land-Grant University at the state and/or local level. Essential experience includes:
• Demonstrated ability in designing, implementing, evaluating and reporting impactful community- based, non-formal educational programs
• Evidence of supervision of a team of professional and support employees (5+)
• Evidence of resource development and management (internal and grant awards)
• Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills
• Evidence of knowledge and understanding of Extension’s educational delivery systems through the creation of print and web-based materials Extension educational resources (curriculum, fact sheets,)
• An ability to identify and build on the strengths of the organization and staff
• Strong leadership skills, including experience in coaching, team-building, resource management, and partnership development.
