Assistant Professor - Nutrition

The School of Health and Consumer Sciences in the College of Education and Human Sciences is inviting applications for a 9-month, full-time, benefits-eligible, tenure-track position with rank of Assistant Professor in Nutrition. This position is supervised by the Director of the School of Health and Consumer Sciences. Appointment date is no later than August 22, 2023.

The role of this faculty member will be to establish an independent, externally funded research program that complements the nutrition research in the school. The faculty will teach nutrition courses in the graduate Nutrition and Exercise Science program and may teach undergraduate Nutrition and Dietetics program, as well as mentor student research, and participate in service responsibilities at the university and national levels.


  • Conducting a focused line of scholarly activity in human nutrition.
  • Applying for and obtaining external funding for scholarly activities.
  • Commitment to excellence in undergraduate Nutrition and Dietetics and graduate program in Nutrition and Exercise Science.
  • Teaching graduate and undergraduate classes consistent with program.
  • Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Providing professional service and leadership.


  • Doctoral degree in Nutrition or closely related field completed by appointment date not later than August 22, 2023.
  • Sponsorship is not available for this position; must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate nutrition courses.
  • Record of research publications and grantsmanship proportionate with experience.
  • Effective organizational skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.


  • Teaching experience in higher education.
  • Registered Dietitian.
  • Post-doctoral experience specific to research.
  • Record of involvement in internally and/or externally funded grants.
  • Evidence of professional service.
  • Research interest aligned with federal (NIH or NIFA, FFAR, etc.) nutrition and health research priorities.

The School of Health and Consumer Sciences consists of undergraduate and graduate programs in Athletic Training; Community and Public Health; Exercise Science; Physical Education Teacher Education; Sports and Recreation Management; Nutrition and Dietetics; Leadership and Management of Non-Profits, Hospitality, Event and Tourism Management; Aviation Education, and Fashion Studies and Retail Merchandising. The department serves approximately 950 undergraduate majors, 120 graduate majors and 40 faculty/staff.

As the state’s 1862 Morrill Act land-grant institution, the work of the university is carried out on its main resident campus in Brookings, at sites in Sioux Falls, Pierre, Rapid City, and Aberdeen, and through Extension offices and Agricultural Experiment Station research sites across South Dakota.
