Assistant Professor – Precision Agriculture Automation Engineering

The Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department at South Dakota State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in Automation Engineering. This is a nine-month, full-time, benefits-eligible, tenure track, faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering. The appointment would begin in January of 2022. This position is supervised by the department head of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering.

SDSU is especially interested in candidates that can contribute to and/or coordinate course offerings that address the experiences of underrepresented minorities in organizations. Men, women, minorities, veterans, and people with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.


The successful candidate will develop a nationally recognized research program with relevance for regional cropping systems. The successful candidate will contribute to SDSU’s farm equipment automation efforts by adapting fragile biosensors to the harsh field conditions that agricultural machines operate in. This position will provide strong collaboration with other SDSU faculty that are developing microfluidic chips as biosensors and studying the interaction of plant roots with the surrounding microbial community. The successful candidate will also teach two undergraduate classes that are essential to SDSU’s undergraduate precision agriculture program and is expected to relate well to both engineering students and agronomy students.


  • Applicants must hold an earned PhD degree in Agricultural & Biological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field by date of hire.
  • Prior teaching experience at the collegiate level

  • Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills.


· Familiarity with agricultural machinery used in the upper great plains

· Experience working with farm equipment manufacturers

· Potential for becoming a Licensed Professional Engineer

The Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department has 12 faculty members with expertise in water quality and water management, off road equipment, precision agriculture, and bio processing. The department currently has about 225 undergraduate students majoring in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Agricultural Systems Technology, and Precision Agriculture.

As the state’s 1862 Morrill Act land-grant institution, the work of the university is carried out on its main resident campus in Brookings, at sites in Sioux Falls, Pierre, Rapid City, and Aberdeen, and through Extension offices and Agricultural Experiment Station research sites across South Dakota.
