Assistant Professor of Practice - Graphic Design

The South Dakota State University School of Design invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Practice in Graphic Design to begin no later than August 2022. This is a full-time, 9-month, benefit-eligible term appointment and the position reports to the Director of the School of Design.

The School of Design includes the visual arts: graphic design, and studio arts and the built environment: architecture, interior design and landscape architecture. Collectively, School faculty form a collaborative teaching and research environment that values cross-program and interdisciplinary initiatives. The successful candidate will contribute to building national and international stature and recognition for the discipline, School and University.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach courses within the professional curriculum, such as design studios for print, digital and time-based production;
  • Provide service to the discipline, university, and community; and
  • Teach in multi-disciplinary courses within the School of Design.

DISCIPLINARY CONTENT AREAS:  

Design studios for print, digital, and time-based production.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Professional degree (BFA or MFA) in Graphic Design or international equivalent by time of appointment.
  • Terminal degree (masters or PhD) in Graphic Design or related field or international equivalent by time of appointment.
  • Potential to develop and teach academic coursework in one or more of the disciplinary content areas.
  • Minimum of 5 years full time professional practice experience.
  • Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Evidence of teaching Graphic Design at university level.
  • Professional practice experience working with others in various disciplines.
  • Record of service within the discipline and/or profession.

SALARY:

Commensurate with qualifications.
