The College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences (CAFLS) has five academic departments: Agricultural Sciences; Animal and Veterinary Sciences; Plant and Environmental Sciences; Forestry and Environmental Conservation; and Food, Nutrition and Packaging Sciences. CAFLS serves approximately 1,730 undergraduate students and 390 graduate students. Degrees are offered in 12 baccalaureate, 10 masters, and 7 doctoral areas of study. The College has 157 faculty and 552 staff located on the main campus and across the state. Clemson has six agriculture and natural resources Research and Education Centers and 46 Extension offices strategically located throughout the state. Duties and Responsibilities:
The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs is responsible for helping shape and articulate a clear and ambitious vision to students, faculty, administration, and stakeholders regarding undergraduate academic programs within the College. This role includes building a diverse and inclusive student body and faculty/staff population. The successful candidate will lead the creation of innovative and experiential learning opportunities that are aligned with the College and University visions and values to provide world-class experiences for students. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs oversees or coordinates all undergraduate programs in CAFLS, including functions related to assessment, advising, curricula, instruction, recruitment, diversity and inclusion, orientation of new and transfer students, student services, scholarships, career services, student leadership development, and faculty development. The Associate Dean is engaged with strategic planning, manages the allocation of academic resources, and is the primary liaison with the University regarding undergraduate academic program matters. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs works closely with other Colleges across the University and the country. The Associate Dean reports directly to the Dean of CAFLS and will counsel the Dean on faculty actions, including academic development priorities, planning and hiring, annual evaluations, reappointment, tenure, promotion, post-tenure review, sabbaticals, academic policies, procedures and grievances. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs also supervises staff and represents the College and Dean as assigned.
The candidate must have an earned Doctorate in a field relevant to one of the academic departments of the College and have credentials to merit appointment at the rank of full professor in one of the academic departments. The candidate must be able to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the public, and have a demonstrated dedication and vision for excellence in undergraduate education that will produce the future professionals in agriculture, food, forestry, life sciences, and natural resource systems. Demonstrated characteristics should include strong leadership, administrative effectiveness, and the ability to work successfully as part of a leadership team. Experience in undergraduate curricular development, undergraduate student teaching, or undergraduate student advising in the fields of agriculture, life sciences, or forestry is preferred.
