About This Role:

The Office of the Vice President for Research is seeking a full-time associate vice president for research compliance (AVPRC). The AVPRC will be an experienced and innovative leader, skilled at collaborating with all levels of faculty, staff, and students within the university. Reporting to the Vice President for Research, the AVPRC is responsible for regulatory oversight and compliance of university research and teaching programs with applicable federal, state, local and organizational rules, regulations, policies, and guidelines. These responsibilities include identifying and/or investigating research noncompliance or nonconformance with appropriate rules, regulations and or guidelines; and for reporting to appropriate external oversight or funding authorities. The AVPRC will have oversight of the University Research Compliance Office, the Comparative Medicine Group, and the Biosecurity Research Institute Biosafety Office.




• Assume primary responsibility for oversight of the University's research compliance programs, including critical areas of animal care and use; human subjects' research; export controls compliance, and biosafety/biosecurity programs. This responsibility includes the overall operation, effectiveness and perception of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, the Institutional Review Board, the Institutional Biosafety Committee, and the Dual Use Research Concern Committee.

• Federal and State Regulatory Liaison: Serve as point person for the university with the NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), the USDA Animal Plant and Health Protection Services (APHIS); the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Animal Care (AAALAC), the the Office of Biotechnology Activities (OBA), and serves as the Institutional Contact for DURC (ICDURC)

• Develop, assess, and administer adequate institutional training for numerous compliance related subjects, including animal care and use, human subjects, biosafety, export controls, responsible conduct of research, and Public Health Service Financial Conflict of Interest.

• Serve as the focal coordination point for research compliance programs and activities with appropriate university entities, including but not necessarily limited to public safety, faculty and staff, administration, and with the interested public as appropriate.

• Serve on the Environmental Health &Safety committee, Associate Deans for Research Council ADRC, and as Co-Chair of the Conflict of Interest and Conflict of Time Commitment Disclosure Review Committee.

• Serve as a member of Emergency Management Advisory Group, Risk and Compliance Council, Research Security and Integrity Working Group, and International Risk Advisory Working Group.




• Lead University Research Compliance Office and BRI Biosafety Team: The AVPRC will provide administrative oversight, leadership and supervision for the University Research Compliance Office and will work closely with the Director of the Comparative Medical Group to provide leadership and administration of that team. The AVPR will also have oversight of Biosecurity Research Institute Biosafety staff and programs and oversight responsibility for the university's Select Agent program, which involves active involvement with the Centers for Disease Control/United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services Select Agent programs in coordination with the University Responsible Official.

What You'll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a bachelor's degree and five to eight years of relevant experience to include:


More than 5 years of documented knowledge of federal research compliance rules


Ability to identify and achieve goals with minimal guidance, and foster and work in a team-oriented service environment Demonstrated supervisory and administrative expertise


Preferred Qualifications:


• Master's degree or Ph.D. or other appropriate degree, e.g., D.V.M. or M.D.

• Experience in a higher education setting


Research compliance knowledge and experience in:


• Animal care and use oversight

• Experience in biosafety

• Select agent oversight and/or experience

• Human subjects research oversight experience

• Export controls- research security


Other Requirements:


Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment

• Ability to acquire a security clearance

• Ability to pass a K-State pre-employment background check.

• Ability to pass National Select Agent security risk assessment

$129,377 - $184,360 Annually
