JOB SUMMARY:

Work at the LaMaster Dairy Center. Responsible for assisting in the care, feeding, and management of cattle, operation of farm equipment, and robotic milker. Assist with research and teaching activities to accomplish experiments and instruction. Some on-call responsibilities. Completes other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES:

50% – Essential – Animal Management: Primarily responsible for feeding, care and management of cattle on farm. Includes feed mixing, deliver, and monitoring. Observation, reporting, and administering animal health and management protocols. Maintain sanitation of facilities. Follows, assists, and provides herd health protocols and vaccinations protocols for all animals.

35% – Essential – Equipment and Facilities Operation: Able to operate all farm equipment including tractors, trucks, skid steers, loaders, dump trucks, feed wagon, hay grinder, and others as necessary. Request and assist with maintenance of farm equipment. Assist with operation of DeLaval robotic milking system as needed.
Coordinates fence repair and building maintenance. Assists with lagoon operations for DHEC compliance.

15% – Essential – Research and Teaching: Coordinates with farm manager to prepare animals and supplies for research and teaching activities.
Assist research and teaching faculty with sample collection and instruction activities. Assist or conduct tours for classes, camps, and visitors in a professional manner.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education – A bachelor’s degree in animal husbandry, agriculture or a related field and experience in agricultural research or animal care that is directly related to the area of employment. Work experience in animal care or agricultural research may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Work Experience – 2+ years of dairy farm experience

Licenses/Certifications – Confined Animal Manure Management (CAMM), Artificial Insemination (AI), Dairy Animal Care and Quality Assurance (DACQA)

Acts as Lead – Acts as a Lead by guiding the work of others who perform essentially the same work.

No Budget Responsibilities – No fiscal responsibility for the department’s budget.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work Experience – 2+ years of dairy farm experience

Licenses/Certifications – Confined Animal Manure Management (CAMM), Artificial Insemination (AI), Dairy Animal Care and Quality Assurance (DACQA)
