Director of Strategic Business Operations

The Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability, founded in 2010, is the hub of collaborative sustainability research at Cornell University, with a current annual budget of about $7 million. Cornell Atkinson forges vital connections among faculty, researchers, students, staff, and external partners. The center’s funding and programming accelerate groundbreaking research within and across all of Cornell’s colleges and schools with a network of more than 600 Cornell Atkinson Faculty Fellows. The Director of Strategic Business Operations of the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability serves as a strategic, practical, and results-driven leader in partnership with the director. Serves as the director of operations and the strategic finance director of the center, and also serves as head of staff development as the center’s liaison with Research Division Human Resources. Oversees all aspects of the center’s day-to-day operations, including research grants and other programs, finance, budget, information systems, human resources, and facilities, maintaining a high functioning organization and a culture of continuous improvement. Advises and partners with the Director to implement the center’s strategic plan.

The successful candidate will have strong people leadership skills, with an approachable style, excellent intuition and judgment, supervisory, managerial, organizational, analytical, and creative problem-solving skills.  The ability to attract and recruit top talent, motivate the team, delegate effectively, celebrate diversity within the team, and manage performance; widely viewed as a strong developer of others.

Extensive experience in the management of complex projects, contracts or grants, including reporting, budgeting, trend forecasting trends and long-range strategic planning. Experience and success in leading and delegating to a diverse group of colleagues working in a collaborative, team-based environment.

In executing the center’s strategic plan, and while directing the center’s business and operations team, provides empathetic leadership and guidance to fellow staff directors to ensure shared vision, effective collaboration and alignment across the center’s other teams: Communications, Development, Strategic Partnerships and Student & Postdoc Programs. Provides strategic direction to and manages long range planning projects with respect to operations, financial resources, personnel, space (including the move into a new building in 2024), and internal policy, processes, and system development. Builds strong relationships; understands and manages the cross-functional impact of program and resource decisions.
