Dean of the Mike Ilitch School of Business

Wayne State University (WSU), a premier public research university in the heart of Detroit, invites nominations and applications for the position of dean of the Mike Ilitch School of Business (MISB).

Wayne State, founded in 1868, is Michigan's third-largest and only urban research university, with the Carnegie Foundation's highest classifications for research and community engagement and annual research expenditures of more than $244 million. Thirteen schools and colleges offer more than 350 programs to nearly 25,000 graduate, professional and undergraduate students As shown by its world-renowned faculty, top-ranked programs, groundbreaking discoveries, academic excellence and pioneering research are central to Wayne State's mission. Wayne State is a member of the University Research Corridor, along with the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, which generates 95% of the research in the state, supporting economic growth throughout Michigan. As one of the city's largest employers, Wayne State has a $2.4 billion impact in Detroit — a driving force behind the city's resurgence.

Established in 1946, the business school was renamed in 2015 in recognition of a $40 million gift from Mike and Marian Ilitch. Thanks to this lead investment, the school moved to a new state-of-the-art building in the heart of Detroit in 2018, expanding academic programming and collaborations with city businesses. The mission of MISB is to prepare students for challenging and rewarding careers, advance the boundaries of scholarly and practitioner knowledge and enhance the economic vitality of the city of Detroit, the state of Michigan and beyond, through its programs, research and community engagement. Undergraduate students can enroll in one of six undergraduate majors: accounting, finance, global supply chain management, information systems management, marketing and management, as well as an undergraduate certificate in entrepreneurship and innovation and a post-bachelor certificate in accounting. At the graduate level, the Ilitch School of Business offers graduate certificates in entrepreneurship and innovation, and business; an M.B.A. with 13 optional concentrations; a concurrent J.D./M.B.A. (in partnership with the WSU Law School); and specialized M.S. degrees in accounting, finance, automotive supply chain management, and data science and business analytics (in partnership with the WSU College of Engineering). The school also offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration (Ph.D.) with three program tracks of marketing, management and finance. All students enjoy access to a variety of learning platforms for career success.

Reporting to the provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, the dean is the chief academic, administrative and fiscal officer of the school. The dean's responsibilities include developing and implementing a compelling strategic plan, supporting a commitment to and further establishing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, ensuring the success of students at all levels, as well as recruiting, developing and retaining distinguished faculty and talented staff. The next dean will generate new resources, expand undergraduate enrollment, strategically develop additional masters and certificate programs, maximize the value of the school’s state-of-the-art facility, and engage with local and regional business communities. The dean will also work closely with the Mike Ilitch School of Business Board of Visitors, which is comprised of alumni, business leaders and community members who support the school, its mission and its vision for the future.

The successful candidate should be an experienced administrator and transformational leader. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree from an accredited institution and have a record of teaching and scholarly or professional attainment that merits appointment as professor with tenure. The desired candidate will have exceptional leadership skills, strong business acumen and experience in strategic planning, fiscal and budget management and organizational development. The ideal candidate will also have experience with academic innovation and effective engagement with the business community. Candidates should be open and transparent communicators who embrace shared governance and foster a positive work environment for the faculty and staff through mutual respect, collaboration, enthusiasm and inclusion. Experience with AACSB and its accrediting principles and policies is preferred.
