Digital Initiatives Coordinator

South Dakota State University (SDSU) Hilton M. Briggs Library is offering an exciting career opportunity as a Digital Initiatives Coordinator. We are looking for a creative and innovative professional to join us in providing leadership for the development, growth, preservation, and security of the Hilton M. Briggs Library digital collections and records management in support of scholars and researchers. This is a twelve-month, full-time, benefit-eligible position. This position is supervised by the Archivist and Special Collections Librarian.

Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Developing and implementing workflows for the acquisition, arrangement, description, preservation, and accessibility of the University’s digital assets for the University Archives including born-digital files.
  • Contributing to and implementing policies and workflows for long-term sustainability of the University’s records management.
  • Assisting with grant applications and other library efforts to obtain external funding to support digitization.
  • Growing SDSU’s digital collections and assuring a quality user experience.
  • Overseeing the digitization of archival collections.
  • Managing and preserving audiovisual materials.
  • Complying with best practices, regulations, and laws regarding digital collections.
  • Maintaining partnerships with entities such as the Digital Library of South Dakota and the Digital Public Library of America.
  • Assisting with archival reference and research services.
  • Providing outreach and communication, including the management of the Archives and Special Collections website and social media.
  • Supervision and/or direction of student employees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree by start date;
  • At least one year of experience working in archives, libraries, historical societies, or similar setting;
  • Knowledge of current trends and new developments in digital library initiatives, archives, and special collections;
  • Knowledge of current metadata schemas and standards, such as Dublin Core, and digital content management systems;
  • Experience with digital file management in multiple formats;
  • Experience planning, managing, and overseeing multiple projects, meeting deadlines, and prioritizing work in alignment with strategic goals;
  • Ability to adapt to change with flexibility, creativity, and sound judgment;
  • Experience working both independently and collaboratively in a collegial, team-based environment and maintaining positive working relationships;
  • Experience interacting with the public;
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds, climb ladders, reach overhead, bend, and push fully loaded carts of books and boxes weighing over 100 pounds;
  • A valid driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire;
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library or Information Science;
  • Coursework in archival studies;
  • Supervision experience;
  • Knowledge of privacy and copyright issues in digital collections;
  • Experience working with digital collections including born-digital files and the creation and management of digitization projects;
  • Knowledge of XML, Python, and other coding languages;
  • Experience with website management systems, including Drupal;
  • Experience with audiovisual analog-to-digital conversion;
  • Experience with digital archives management and preservation;
  • Experience handling archival materials.

SALARY:

$38,000 - $45,000 commensurate with qualifications.

The SDSU Archives and Special Collections unit contains the University’s archives, as well as material related to South Dakota’s history and life. These collections are comprised of nearly 9,000 linear feet of papers, publications, photographs, audiovisual materials, and artifacts. The Archives makes available over 100,000 digital objects from these collections.

The city also boasts an abundance of attractions and activities, including the Children’s Museum of South Dakota, Dakota Nature Park, South Dakota Art Museum, McCrory Gardens, South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum, Outdoor Adventure Center, and the Brookings Summer Arts Festival.
