Director of Human Resources

Position Overview:

The Director of Human Resources reports to the Dean, with a dotted line relationship to the Vice President for Human Resources. The Director works closely with the CEHD Senior Management Team, Academic Leadership Team and College-Wide Center Directors, as well as the administrative directors in the college. The CEHD HR team is currently comprised of the HR Director and 5 HR Professionals.

Job Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership and Planning (40%)

  • Serve as a strategic partner with CEHD Leadership, leading the assessment, planning, development, and execution of the college’s short-term and long-term human resources (HR) strategies, including anticipating emerging issues and trends that may impact CEHD.
  • Promote and enable a culture that enhances diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Guide the development, analysis and interpretation of collegiate HR data reporting to promote effective decision-making.
  • Support Associate Dean of Graduate Education and Faculty Development regarding faculty affairs, development, and promotion/tenure processes.
  • Advise and consult in HR risk management and take appropriate actions to minimize rise.


Workforce Planning, Compensation, Performance Management and Engagement (40%)

  • Consult with CEHD leaders on employee relations, organizational changes and workforce and succession planning.
  • Collaborate with CEHD’s Dean and Chief Financial Officer/Chief of Operations in establishing fair and sustainable compensation strategies and processes to support effective recruitment, retention, equity, merit and awards.
  • Partner with senior leaders to drive leadership development, employee development, a culture of service and excellence, and effective performance management.
  • Develop HR strategies to increase employee engagement, community and belonging.


Compliance (10%)

  • Ensure compliance with federal and state law, University policies, codes, contracts and rules.
  • Develop procedures and practices to support and implement University policies, contracts, and governing documents related to classification, benefits, compensation, hiring, leaves, departures, performance management, equity and access, engagement, HR data security and integrity and other HR initiatives.
  • Provide consultation and investigation of HR issues that are particularly complex or sensitive, including partnering with the appropriate University offices, as necessary.


Supervision (10%)

  • Manage and direct a service-oriented HR team that provides meaningful support to all levels of the college.
  • Establish training, guidance and oversight to the HR processes performed across the college.

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in Human Resources or related field plus 10 years of related professional HR experience.
  • Working knowledge of employment laws, rules, and regulations affecting human resources.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated success in strategic planning and project management, including organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with ambiguity, use sound judgment, and exercise independent judgment and discretion.
  • Demonstrated success working and leading in a complex, multi-layered and collaborative environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing across all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and an ability to influence other directly and indirectly.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in HR or related field and/or HR or related certification.
  • Experience leading a team of professionals including experience in HR management, HR development, HR consulting, and payroll management.
  • Experience working in academic settings with faculty development, promotion, and tenure.
  • Experience fostering an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplace.
  • Proven success in workforce planning and organizational design.
  • Experience with Human Resource Management Systems (e.g., PeopleSoft).
  • Experience working in a large, complex, and unionized organization.
  • Experience working in higher education and/or public sector employment settings.
  • Skills or training in change management and conflict resolution.

The College of Education and Development’s (CEHD) Human Resources Office is a strategic partner with the CEHD Leadership Team in the creation of an effective and agile organizational culture, committed to excellence through continuous improvement and innovation, and championing a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. CEHD is an academic college comprising 7 academic departments and 2 college-wide centers, offering a broad range of undergraduate, professional and graduate degrees and certificates, and research and outreach activities. The college has an all-funds budget of over $150 million, 4,400 students, and 1,175 employees including 160 tenure/tenure-track faculty.
