About This Role:

The College of Agriculture and K-State Research and Extension at Kansas State University seeks nominations and applications for the Director, Research, K-State Research and Extension, Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Programs, College of Agriculture. This is a leadership opportunity at the convergence of agricultural research, outreach, and academics. This is a 12-month, full-time administrative appointment with tenure in an academic unit of the College. This position reports to the Dean of the College of Agriculture and Director of K-State Research and Extension.

This position includes administration, fiscal management, mentoring, outreach, and stakeholder partnerships. The annual operating budget responsibility for the position is over $100 million. We are seeking a creative leader from academia, government, or industry who excels in collaborative problem-solving and desires to work with faculty and our many partners on a wide range of agricultural issues important to Kansas, the nation, and the world. Director, Research, K-State Research and Extension

• Plan and execute a strategic research vision for the organization that aligns with the College of Agriculture, K-State Research and Extension, and Kansas State University strategic plan, and fosters an environment that leads to significant growth and innovation.

• Lead strategic, proactive, and capacity-building activities for individual faculty members and multidisciplinary teams that result in the sustained growth of the extramural funding portfolio.

• Oversee the preparation and approval of federally-required Hatch and Multi-State Research Fund projects submitted by faculty.

• Coordinate the preparation of the five-year plan of work required by USDA – NIFA and prepare annual reports of progress on these research plans.

• Serve as an advocate for the research programs of the College and K-State Research and Extension with university leadership, external stakeholders, legislative groups, and funding agencies.

• Support management of research facilities.

• Provide leadership for new and creative research initiatives.

• Develop and manage partnerships with commodity commissions, industry, universities, and state and federal agencies.

• Facilitate multi-disciplinary research and effective teams.

• Develop and manage the annual research budget for K-State Research & Extension (Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station, KAES) collaboratively with unit leaders and the administrative leadership team.

• Work cooperatively with the College of Agriculture and K-State Research and Extension central management team, as well as collaborating colleges and units in which KAES has partnerships.

• Oversee Ag Safety Program and supervise occupational health and safety director position.

• Oversee the administration of external proposal submissions and supervise the research operations manager.

• Serve as liaison to commodity commissions and coordinate research opportunities to improve production and profitability.

Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Programs, College of Agriculture

• Plan and execute a strategy that promotes strong graduate programs, particularly doctoral programs, supporting the research vision for the College of Agriculture.

• Supervise Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs and New Faculty Development.

• Partner with academic departments and provide creative

• leadership to develop new graduate programs, implement new approaches to increase graduate enrollment, and promote a culture of professional development for graduate students.

• Manage support for graduate programs in collaboration with unit leaders.

• Liaise between the Graduate School and graduate programs for recruitment, graduate program assessment of student learning, and graduate program review.

• Manage graduate student scholarship awards.

• Closely coordinate with unit leaders to foster productive research at off-campus locations.

• Coordinate with the KSRE Director for Extension to assure that research and Extension are linked and contiguous.

• Serve on the Associate Deans for Research Council and other university committees that address research and graduate programs.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

• An earned doctorate in agriculture, food science, natural resources, or a related field.

• At least six years of professional experience with a demonstrated track record of performance and leadership in academics, government, or industry.

• An outstanding record of scholarly achievement in multidisciplinary research, outreach, service, and/or instruction.

• Evidence of ability to provide collaborative leadership and creative vision for diverse research, outreach, and academic programs.

• Demonstrated commitment to the principles of equal opportunity, diversity, and inclusion.

• Excellent communication, organizational, managerial, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Over 10 years of post-graduate career experience culminating in a documented record of distinction in teaching, research, outreach, extension, mentoring, and/or stakeholder partnerships.

• A clear understanding of and commitment to the mission of land grant institutions.

• Demonstrated ability to lead a large and complex research organization.

• Track record of using research and extension to solve problems and convey practical solutions to stakeholders.

• Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining strong stakeholder relationships.

• Demonstrated competence in and dedication to recruitment, retention, mentoring, and success of faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds.

• Familiarity with relevant state and federal research agencies, programs, and regulations.

• Ability to manage and enhance a large, complex budget.

• Ability to work effectively as a member of an administrative team with strategic responsibility, as well as manage day-to-day operational requirements.

• Experience in liaison roles with external partners and agencies.

• Ability to work with and appear before legislative and regulatory bodies as a trusted source of expert knowledge.

• Ability to effectively implement the policies of Kansas State University, the Kansas State University College of Agriculture, K-State Research and Extension, and the Kansas Board of Regents.
