As the University’s senior academic officer, the Executive Vice President and Provost will provide visionary, exemplary, and innovative academic and administrative leadership consistent with the standards of excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship expected at a Carnegie-designated R1 institution. Broad and comprehensive responsibilities include: coordinating faculty, staff, and student activities in defining and implementing the University’s teaching, research and service missions; supporting existing faculty and staff governance; pursuing and executing strategic academic planning and strategic enrollment management including the direction, growth and review of academic programs; approving faculty and academic staff appointments; developing academic policy; and managing the fiscal affairs of the academic enterprise. The Provost reports directly to the President and represents the President in his or her absence.


Founded in 1831 as the state’s first university and known as the Capstone of Higher Education, The University of Alabama is a comprehensive, student-centered, research-intensive university. UA, having doubled in size since 2002, has been one of the nation’s fastest-growing flagship universities. UA currently enrolls more than 38,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, and now attracts more than half of its students from out of state. Additionally, in recent years UA has invested more than $2.5 billion in campus buildings and infrastructure, including over $400 million in world-class research facilities. As part of the Peter Bryce Campus acquisition, UA also has significant land and facility holdings available for allocation to the research mission. External grants and contracts for research, instruction, service and fellowships reached record levels for UA in fiscal year 2018 and grew by 85 percent over the last five fiscal years (2014-2018). In December 2018, the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education designated UA as a Very High Research Activity doctoral university or “R1.” In June 2019, the Office for Research and Economic Development launched its Five-Year Strategic Plan to help facilitate the growth and impact of the research enterprise. In fiscal year 2019, total sponsored awards grew by another 33 percent.

UA has planned carefully for this expansion, adding faculty, facilities and support functions to provide an excellent education to all students. The University employs more than 1,850 faculty. Faculty members work closely with students, and many involve students at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels in basic and applied research. As students and their families across the nation recognize the quality and value UA offers, the University has welcomed excellent freshman classes year after year, with each new class exceeding the last in academic quality. The 2019 entering class of 6,754 freshman carried an average high school grade-point average of 3.77 and 38% had a grade-point average of 4.0 or higher, both UA records. About 40% of the freshman class had an ACT score of 30 or higher. The 2019 freshman class includes 256 National Merit Scholars, the largest in UA history. Currently, UA has more than 700 National Merit Scholars enrolled.


As the chief academic officer, the Provost will promote excellence in teaching, research, and service both within and across the 13 schools, colleges, and related academic areas that are part of the University, among the other universities in The University of Alabama System, and with other educational institutions in the state, the region, and elsewhere. The Provost will work with other Vice Presidents to promote student success, support existing faculty and staff governance, enhance the University’s profile inside and outside the state of Alabama, grow the University’s research enterprise, and ensure responsible allocation of fiscal, human, and physical resources. The Provost should advance the emphasis on diversity and inclusion of which The University of Alabama is justifiably proud. This diversity will be evident not only in the demographic characteristics of the students, staff, and faculty but also in the variety of ideas, opinions, scholarly perspectives, and educational enterprises throughout the University. The Provost must have a demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of students and staff, as well as faculty, and experience in stimulating collaboration of pedagogical and scholarly activity across disciplinary and institutional boundaries.

A successful candidate will have:

1) an earned doctorate from an accredited institution;

2) a record of academic achievement in teaching and research commensurate with a Carnegie-designated R1 institution which merits appointment as a full professor with tenure in a discipline offered at UA;

3) a proven record of success as an academic administrator;

4) a clear vision for the role of a comprehensive public R1 university in teaching, research, economic development, outreach, and service in the 21st century;

5) evidence of commitment to the concept of a student-centered university;

6) demonstrated excellence as a nationally or internationally recognized scholar with the experience necessary to guide and contribute to UA’s aspiration and potential to be a premier and internationally recognized research-intensive university;

7) outstanding communication and interpersonal skills including evidence of ability to facilitate collaboration with and among diverse faculty, staff, administrators, and students across the University;

8) a commitment to student success;

9) experience in setting an academic agenda and leading within a complex, dynamic, and diverse university; and

10) evidence of fostering a diverse and inclusive environment for students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
