Position Overview

This is a full-time, 12-month non-tenure position that is eligible for rank and promotion within the MU College of Human Environmental Sciences. Non-tenure rank (Assistant or Associate Extension Professor) maybe assigned depending on qualifications and experience demonstrated through a curricula vita and by the College’s promotion policy. The appointment is an annually renewable contract with the Youth and Families Extension Unit within the College of Human Environmental Sciences and reports to the Dean of Human Environmental Sciences. This position will have strong linkages to MU colleges and departments pertaining to natural resources and science.

This position provides leadership to the design, development, delivery and evaluation of the Nutrition and Health curriculum, educational program models, strategies and interventions within Nutrition & Health Extension by working collaboratively with colleagues, teaching and research faculty, regional Extension faculty and staff, youth, volunteers and stakeholders.

The position is responsible for the development of curriculum and educational opportunities in nutrition and health as related to PSE interventions and is expected to collaborate with faculty in other nutrition, health and physical activity fields for cross-disciplinary education outreach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop researched-based Extension programs, materials, and curricula in the area of Nutrition, Health and Wellness Promotion, Obesity Prevention, and Chronic Disease Prevention and Management.
  • Provide leadership and direction for the curriculum selection, training, implementation and evaluation for the MU EFNEP and SNAP-Ed programs
  • Produce related program needs assessments, professional development opportunities, evaluation and research. Translate research into educational offerings that can be delivered locally by regional Extension faculty. Work closely with regional Extension faculty to assist them in locally based programs.
  • Utilize mass media as a delivery method for educational programming, when appropriate.
  • Seek external funding to support program efforts. Manage all funding sources in accordance with University and funding agency policy.
  • Contribute to the scholarship of the academy by submitting abstracts, posters, presentations, and publications to professional conferences and peer-reviewed journals.
  • Work cooperatively with University faculty to develop strong multi-disciplinary collaborations.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with state agencies, institutions of higher education, professional organizations, etc.
  • Provide students with internship, research and educational opportunities. Mentor undergraduate and graduate students, as needed. Coordinate student experiences in county Extension offices, as requested.
  • Serve on department, college or university committees, as requested. Regularly attend Department of Nutrition & Exercise Physiology faculty meetings. Contribute to the department activities as requested by the department chair.
  • Represent the University of Missouri at local, state, regional and national meetings.


Remain current on trends and research-based knowledge to effectively

create relevant, reliable and responsive education. Apply this knowledge in scholarly products such as curriculum, inservice education instruction, articles in professional and popular press, presentations at professional meetings, grant proposals and more.

Actively participate in professional development opportunities to continuously improve skills and increase research-based knowledge. Demonstrate mastery of core competencies, including subject matter expertise, effective and innovate teaching strategies, program development processes, and integration of new and emerging technology.

Administrative supervision is received from the Department Chair of Nutrition & Exercise Physiology. Programmatic supervision is received from the Educational Director of Nutrition & Health Extension.


An earned master’s degree with course work in a discipline or program related to nutrition, public health, dietetics or related fields. Equivalent experience will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five or more years of professional experience in designing, conducting and evaluating education opportunities in the areas of health, nutrition and/or physical activity.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of natural resources/science to volunteerism, human growth and development, experiential education, community collaborations and state and national issues.
  • An earned Ph.D.
